When am i supposed to call in sick? tonight that i feel like crap or early in the a.m. if im supposed to go in at 7a.m.???

The usual policy is at least an hour before your scheduled shift.  That's bad for me because I live only 5 minutes away and I don't get up until a half hour before I'm scheduled to work.

If you call in at night, for the next morning, they'll probably tell you, "Well. Let's wait and see how you feel in the morning."

At our store, they want at least 2 hours notice. Plus, they want you to talk to someone in management.

Don't let them bully you. And make sure you can get a doctors note. That helps a lot.

yeah its a 2 hour notice. they will probably try to guilt trip you but if i am sick enough to call in then i am NOT coming to work

the typical policy is try to call in 2 hours before your shift. of course that is not always possible when you work the am shift so calling in as soon as you can will be acceptable. if you are sick then working in a food area is not a good thing of course so staying home is better than working. beside, you health and well being should be more important that working. asking for a doctor's letter can only be sought after being sick for 3 days consecutively. it would not be fair to incur a charge to go see a doctor just for one day and why would one want to overburden the medical field for a simple cold?

If you have a cold, you shouldn't call in. Simple as that. A flu and serious throwing up, strep throat, and mono are probable causes.

listen - if i got a cold and feel like crap - i'm calling in. simple as that. if i got a hangover and feel like crap - i'm calling in. simple as that. if my kid is sick - i'm calling in. simple as that. if i just feel like sleeping - i'm calling in. simple as that.

its KROGER. they will get by w/o us for a shift

lol At calling in due to hangovers or lack of sleep. Talk about disrespect. You deserved to be fired for that. It's workers like you that make Kroger a miserable place to be.

At the store I used to work at, on New Years Day, several employees called in drunk. Another called in because her mom was too drunk to drive her to work.

Being shorthanded or having to make up for other workers lazy tendencies makes things miserable. It's people with your attitude that makes my job harder than it should be.

 If you don't care about how miserable your coworkers are feeling while they're sick, even if they're not on their "death bed," why should they care about how miserable you are when you're short handed? They shouldn't. I wouldn't. I couldn't care less about how you feel.  If I feel sick, I'm calling off.  If you're unhappy about that, too damn bad.

lol kroger is like a tile jungle. My store is ok but my dept. mngr is a c##t. I hate kroger. imake 750 after a year at 740.. min wage here. She is like kim un. her rule is beyond krogers as she sees it. she never has worked a sat or sunday since i can remember. How can she do that but i call in for my own personal reason and im the bad guy. fuuuh get that.

My dept. manager can't work on Sundays. Her contract is an almost ancient one from like the 1980's and it states that she gets paid time and a half for working on a Sunday.

Apparently it isn't worth the company for her to work $24 an hour on a Sunday.

I have a condition that flares up (dont want to say what as its rether ususual and dont want to identify myself). I've worked there over 3 years and at this store (13 months) have called in about 6 times and always have a Dr. note. Yet you would thinki I murdered somebody the way they treat you when you come back. Does the Union have any say in this? Thanks for anybodys opinion, even Mr. Snarky.

My assistant managers contract is similar it's very old but he gets 8 hours of guaranteed overtime every week. He even gets to leave work to go to church and then come back and work the rest of his shift

How much notice is required seems to be made up by whatever manager is talking. Giving them notice as soon as you decide to call off would be professional and considerate, though it may not help your coworkers. I agree that they would prefer that you never be sick unless they are trying to make you sick (stress days are more common now.).

The rules are:

Call store manager. Texting and other social media forms do not count. Call store.

Minimum of 2 hrs before or it's a no call no show.

If you wake up sick in middle of night well that's the loop hole in the rules. How can you call out sick when no one answers the phone at 3 in the fu-cken morning? You can't. Best to go to an in-network clinic and get a dr's note to protect your no call no show.

Try not to call out the day before you leave on vacation or day you get back. Same idea with turning 2 days off into 4 or 5. This is a write up-able offense. 

Repeated call outs will be questioned and it's best to get a dr's note for day. Call the nurse's hotline and they can generally digitize one for you.

You shouldn't call in for a cold? I think it depends where you work. I certainly don't want someone who works in the meat department or who touches everyone's groceries be there handling food with a cold. That's disgusting.

 You dont like it, dont shop at our places.  You never signed a contract saying you had to shop at our places.  And if you think lack of sleep is fireable, you should try working 11-7 and then a 6-2, see how chipper you can be.

 Amen to that.  Ok maybe not the last one barring unusual circumstances but thats just me.

If you are obviously going to die in an hour, don't come in and bring a note from your doctor the the next day. The manager needs to look at you and ask lots of questions. The rules vary from store to store, manager to manager, day to day. Conceal illness to protect the company's reputation.

2 hrs before shift. If you know you are working before store hours you need to call before the store closes. (Many stores n.c. refuses to answer the phones. Or fails to pass on the message) 

You can have up to 3 unexcused absences in a period (3 weeks generally 1 month). 4 or more and you'll be coached. High call outs you will be coached. 

You have to speak to the manager on duty 1st 2nd or 3rd no one else counts. Digital texting does not count. Must have 2 hrs before shift minimum. 

If you fail to satisfy the call out just go to a walk in clinic get a dr note excusing you. You might think "oh, time waster I am not f'n doing it." No you do this to protect your job. If you have a dr note legally they can not refuse it or write you up for it. If they do you can union grievance it. As I had to do when I had an inner ear infection that went on 4 bloody months.

 If your store has night stockers, theyd answer the phone and generally leave a note for the morning shift.   At one point I had one of those this isnt going away overnight sicknesses.  I called work at like 5 or 6p to let them know I couldnt come in.  They said its alright and thanks for the heads up.  (Granted its EXTREMELY rare for me to call out, but the heads up is generally appreciated.
