So my schedule keeps changing from week to week. It is not consistent as my hours vary wildly from one week to the next. I have complained about this and keep getting the same company line : "Full time means full availability !" Yeah but I cannot work a second job to support my family because I never know what my schedule is going to be until Friday prior to the beginning of the week.
So should I go back to part time status and then I can dictate my schedule to THEM instead of the other way around so I can work a second job ? This seems so unfair. How the hell are people suppose to survive on the crumbs this company pays ?!

HA HA!! Under no circumstances can you ever dicate your schedule to the company. EVER. Even if you restrict your availability, your hours will just get slashed more because you are restricted. Basically, if you are restricted they can schedule for the minimum amount of hours in the contract each week and say "Sorry, need to schedule to the needs of the business." I Know this because I've had to do it to make hours when I was writing schedules. If you were part time and had say, one or two days unavailable and not available all day, I'd cut you down to nothing if I had to trim hours.

I didn't say that we we did was right or anything, but it was at the time what we had to do. I only had so many hours to use, so I had to use them as best as possible. In truth, I'm just telling it like it is/was. IN other words, don't hate the players, hate the game. A lot of times management is just doing what they need to do to keep DM's/Corporate off of their backs.

I know just what you described; I live with it every week. At Wal-Mart we have what are called ZMS, Zone Manager Supervisors who mostly handle our scheduling issues for us. But we still have to approve them.
In any case, you're right for the most part---I can't speak for Kroger guidelines---but I always have a little lattitude to work with. The party line is 'BUSINESS NEEDS', but I'm here to say that salaried managers have MUCH more personal control over these personal decisions than most will ever allow their employees to know. And I'm pretty sure that's every where, Kroger included.
