Thinking of transfering to a different department
Permalink

I currently work in the bakery department as a baker.  I've done it for nearly 20 years.  My duties consist of either baking or bagging the bread (including making the donuts if I bake), breaking out the bread dough for the next day's bake, and either baking pies, cookies, and croissants or breaking down the frozen food order and putting it away.  I am constantly rushing at full speed trying to get everything done.  The deli manager seems to forget that I have to do a bread breakout for the next day and she can't understand why I can't get all the pies and cookies done.  She asked me one time how long it takes to do a breakout and I told her an hour and a half.  Sometimes it takes a little less but I always start the breakout an hour and a half before it's time for me to leave.  I try to finish early so I can take my last break.  Sometimes I do.  Sometimes I don't.  She asked me why it took so long to do the breakout and I simply said, "It just does."  I've been doing it for 20 years and I know how long it takes.

I put in a transfer to frozen foods.  The head guy wants me and wants to get rid of a guy who's not pulling his weight.  The thing I'm worried about is being bored working in frozen after being in the bakery for so long.  Working in the freezer doesn't bother me since I do it all the time anyway.  Also, I've seen the other guys working in frozen and they don't seem to be in any big hurry while stocking the shelves.  I think it will be a lot less hectic than working in the bakery but I'm wondering if it's really worth a try.

wow...i kind of feel the same way! i've been in deli bakery for eons and am considering making a change because suddenly my dept. head has decided to start 'helping' me with my job by telling me that she will now be doing certain parts of it for me and relegating other aspects of it to me...an option i wasn't aware she had open to her considering that the co-ordinator no longer wanted her to be doing ANY part of my job any longer...even on my days off. there isn't anyone i can go to in store about this since management is so snowed by her...feeling disgusted by it all.

Maybe if things were the way they used to be I wouldn't want to move somewhere else.  I used to do almost everything in the bakery.  I used to ice cakes.  I can't do roses because my hands are to hot and the icing gets too soft, but I can do everything else.  I put out premade stuff.  I did colossal cookies.  I made cupcakes.  I used to make all the variety cakes back when we used to make them ourselves.  Now, I do the same thing day after day.  I know working in frozen would be pretty much doing the same thing day after day too but at least I wouldn't have to get up at 4:00 am anymore

Wow, that's disappointing to see the deli manager doesn't understand. Sorry to hear that. With the transfer to the Frozen Food Department, I believe it will be like your first day at Kroger. Being in the Deli for 20 years, I'm sure you pretty much know the dept with your eyes closed, and I'm sure you know the general location of items in the frozen food dept, but stocking it will be a totally new game. I support you for wanting to transfer, and wish you the best of luck!

Before you transfer DO ONE THING FIRST AND FOREMOST. Check your contract and pension along with your insurance or health and welfare plans. I am in the meat department and we are a separate union from the rest of the store.

If you was to transfer from our bakery to our meat department YOU WOULD HAVE TO START OVER ON YOUR PENSION AND H&W PLAN.

Check first and see if you are going to cross any union contracts first. You would not loose you pension but have to start another one over. And you would end up having a waiting period to get back your insurance.

Have a 60 year old guy that wants to transfer to my market but I will not take him. He is two months away from being vested in his pension. If he comes to my department then he will loose it and need to start all over. He will also have a waiting period of 45 days to get back his other benifits.
