Sales Up 10% for the Year at Kroger

The Kroger Co. reported $90.4 billion in total sales for fiscal year 2011, an increase of 10.2 percent over 2010.

Identical supermarket sales, without fuel, increased 4.9 percent in FY 2011 compared with the prior fiscal year. Q4 total sales, including fuel, increased 7.7 percent to $21.4 billion over prior year, while same-store sales, without fuel, rose 4.9 percent in the fourth quarter.

We are very pleased with Krogers outstanding performance in fiscal year 2011 and strong fourth-quarter financial results, said David B. Dillon, Krogers chairman and CEO. Our Customer 1st strategy is delivering value for our customers, who are rewarding Kroger with their loyalty. Customer loyalty, in turn, is driving sales and shareholder returns.

Kroger Re-Allocates Cap-Ex

This will mean some divisions wont build stores in a particular year if their stores [projections] dont measure up to the other potential stores, Schlotman said. We stepped back and realized there were some opportunities in some markets that we want to take an advantage of, because they felt they didnt have the capital to spend. We were building decent stores in other parts of the country. But we werent building truly outstanding stores when we had an opportunity to do that.

Schlotman said operating divisions are still responsible for store remodels. The company plans to spend between $1.9 billion and $2.2 billion in capital expenditures this fiscal year It spent around $1.9 billion last year.
