i joined the union, mostly for the pet benefits cuz i love my baby boy(hes a cat and the phone bill being lowered doesnt hurt either) but when the manager walked the store with me most union employees had no idea why they were even with the union or said they didnt wanna pay the dues anymore n such n such. so far, from my managerial experience in the past kroger seems to have their head on straighter than most retail businesses(i didnt even know retail could do that,heheh..)...but i know coming in(and finding this site) that there are drawbacks. so.....im just wondering..who does n doesnt like their job/position? n why? i can and will form my own opinions about the company i'd just like some input as to what are the most prominent issues with the company's employees and i know anonymous people will keep it real. and also i am not happy to start part time but i know most people do with this company so what should be my strategy to get to full time and more pay?

getting full time? kiss a lot of ass. kroger likes to screw people over. I'm in the union because i don't work at walmart.
Drawback for being hired at kroger? NO ONE EVER GETS TRAINED PROPERLY. EVER. The will throw you into something and expect you to do it like you've been doing it for 20 years then bitch at you when you have no clue what you need to do. That's the biggest thing i've hated since working here.

There's all kinds of things not to like, but full time employment is serious business. If you are with this company for years, then maybe you can get it by accident if you are lucky.
I don't think there is a single full time cashier at my store, for example.
do you actually end up using any of the benefits from it? im gonna use the education discounts and the jewelry discount to get my engagement ring and pet insurance

at my store full time employees make 14 an hour. add a dollar to that for night premium and you have a job making 15 an hour stocking groceries. At least, that is what I do anyway.
it's a sweet job I think. Pretty good pay, easy job, get daytime hours off. Lot of Overtime. In about 5 years Im going to start putting bids in on Back Up and Head Department jobs for grocery/produce, etc.
well i was trained in the training center and ive already been in retail for years now so its not too much different from what i was already doing.im being hired as a cashier but the mgr said she has other front end positions that im qualified for so i might not be a cashier for long.also,my schedule is completely open, all i do is work. so when the other employees dont want to/cant come to work i told them call me in, any time, any day,any store.ive already had some other people call me back about other jobs so ill probably just get another part time job if i like this one.

I'd say be careful with the tuition reimbursements. I'm taking classes right now, and paying for it with normal federal financial aid. I could take the FredMeyer tuition reimbursement, but it has way too many catches.
First is getting approved! Someone has to think you'd be "management potential" before approving the reimbursement. I would shoot myself before being a food 3rd, assistant, or manager. Those guys are so stressed, and work way too much.
So you say, why not just play along (as a dept. manager I certainly count as management potential) and take the money? You have to work for a year after you graduate to avoid having to repay ALL OF IT. Also that year, you'll be expected to take a "promotion" to Food dept. management. Where you get to get berated and yelled at by random executives, sent to some store probably across town from you, work WHENEVER they want you to (salaried!), and basically want to commit ritual suicide.
So I'll just keep on with my perfectly fine job (unless I can land a spot somewhere cool, like Whole Foods) until I graduate and then find something more advantagous to do!
Also I've heard the tuition reimbursement takes FOREVER to repay you, if they do. So you'd basically have to take financial aid to pay the bills when its due, and you might get the money back so you can pay it off, but still kinda sucks.
As for the other question, get your ass out of front end. Take a job in produce, or meat/seafood, or nutrition. Avoid the deli and bakery. You'll enjoy your job a bit more, be a lot more "unsupervised" (especially if they dept runs properly and has good managers), and get better hours and pay.
