Kroger employee suicide
Permalink

I just heard about a fellow employee that I used to work with at another store shot himself in the chest.  They said that he had been closing the deli working nights and they changed the schedule and had him opening days and he could not stand the stress of opening and went home and did himself in.  Kroger is not worth killing yourself over, he was 58 years old with health problems.  I'm in my late 40s and feel like I should get into another line of work, do ya'll think that I should?

If you can find work elsewhere and you haven't invested a lot of time in Kroger then by all means look for another job.  I knew two people from my store who commited suicide.  Of course I'm not saying that working at Kroger is what led them to do it but you never know.

if you were in the same situation would you have done the same thing? Food for thought.

Well, I've invested 25 years with Kroger if I find another job, but not in retail and quit Kroger, how would I go about freezing my vested pension until retirement age?

I hope that I don't, and I feel like my health isn't all that great right now. I need to lose some weight. I work overnight on the grocery crew and ever since I started working nights a few years ago, I feel that it has been bad on my health.

we're all doing a slow suicide by working the bullsh*t jobs that we might have at Kroger anyways...

that's my 2¢ worth on this subject

Stress/depression that goes unchecked to the extreme of suicide can be found in all lines of work. Bottom line, this poor person likely would have been in trouble even if he were well off and not working any where; the mentioned stressors definitely pushed him over the edge, but that edge was in his vision regardless.

To the O.P.: Yes, if you have an opportunity to better yourself, definitely seek it out.

we had a employee  commit suicide once, thou i have my doubts it was really suicide.

he caught his new wife, in the sack, in his house with her ex, and the story is, went in the drawer, pulled out a gun, and shot himself.

problem is, he was shot more or less in the facee, not in the temple, or from In the mouth, and he was a gun nut, he would have known that would not be a clean, quick way to do it.

personally, i think we pulled the gun and THREATENED to shoot himself, he was a drama queen, and a stuggle insued, and gun went off.

but as far a kroger and health goes, when i worked at kroger, i was on a anti depressent, an anti anxiety perscription, two high blood pressure meds, a perscrip for developing ulcers, and allergy perscripts.

after almost two years away from that hell hole now, I'm down to just one blood pressure perscrip, and thats it.

I used to dread work  so bad my last year, every day I got sick to my stomach, before work.

yeah, all retail is bad, but out of every job iv,e had, including fast food and retail, none stressed me like kroger

that's all well and good but i promise you there are many worse jobs out there than working at a grocery store (yes, even with the cluster**** of asinine policies that kroger comes up with)

You can try more than once, but once you succeed, that's it.

we've had our differences Dude but ur preachin to the choir here! one of my main goals is to ward off young folks that are settling for a career in retail and especially here at Krogerland where GREED is KING and the welfare and future of long term employees has been flushed away like one giant turd!

May the upper mgmt. that are charting the course with this 70% part time and key retailing and diversity to the point of blatant reverse discrimination find their special place in Hell for their single minded drive for profit.

As long as you give 2 weeks notice before you quit, it will be frozen. Nothing else to be done

 so true.

oh, i done my share of labor jobs. construction, roofing, even cleaned horse stalls for a living for about a year. as hard as the work was thou, , you left each day, knowing you did a good honest days work, and you slept well at night.

kroger, you don't ever fel like you accomplish anything, and managementb will not pass up a chance to tell you such.

I prefered  shoveling horse ****,  then eating krogers ****.

darn it! sounds like KR gonna lose another employee that apparently wasn't as dumb as they thought he was!good luck to u- may u find what ur looking for on the other side of that KR door!

also ur right FF removing manure would be a better gig- prolly the biggest difference would be that u'd only need to wear knee waders vs hip waders. I bet u wouldn't even be subject to bein micro-managed by some mgmt dipstick puppet that didn't study hard enuf in college to get a good job.

He probably didn't kill himself because he had to open at Kroger. He probably killed himself because he was in his FIFTIES and still working at Kroger. It's not like changing one ****ty job for another ****ty job is going to make a huge difference when your too old to really start making something of yourself. Lets face it, you're going to in your fifties soon yourself, you're not going to quit Kroger and go build rocket propulsion systems for NASA. Keep your job and make the best of it, old man.

It's sad when a company creates a work environment so stressful that someone feels that suicide is their only option.

its all the people that come in to the store that make kroger emp want to kill themselves. most are on food stamps, or just feel like since there possessions take up more space that the can come in boasting I wnt to college. maybe some folks just dont give a dump about college or couldnt afford it or there parents couldnt afford it. come on in were union so they can only send me home when I tell you to go f@#k yourself. Ill still have my job the next day.& as always thank you for shopping at your neighborhood  Kroger ; )

I currently work for Kroger. I was on anti depressant medication 4 years ago due to a suicide attempt.  I stopped taking my meds cold turkey 3 months after taking them and I have never went back. I have actually been doing great, and then kroger happened. After a stressful 2 years of working for kroger I am depressed I think about suicide all the time. I f*cking hate my life. Thank god I am strong enough to realize that this piece of sh*t job is not worth my life and its time to get the f*ck out. If I am still here by the time I'm 40 I will gladly put a bullet in my head I work way to hard for this ungrateful company. Hey kroger money is not everything,  just as you rise your time will come when you fall! Question if your people are so great why do treat them like sh*t?

Kroger isn't worth dying over, if you hate your life so much there so much, then seriously, just quit the job. Find something you enjoy :)
