Hired under false pretenses?

I was hired a couple weeks ago as a cake decorator. For my first week, I was in the bakery doing cookies, cupcakes, and strawberry specials. This week and next week I have been scheduled for the deli. I HATE the deli. I did not apply for the deli. I applied for cake decorator in the bakery. I asked the manger and store manager about this. Each told me they were cross-training everybody (which I don't see happening.) When I was interviewed and hired, I asked what I would be doing. I was told that I would primarily decorate cakes. My other duties would be cleaning, baking cookies, packaging cookies, markdowns, and bread baking. I was told nothing of working in the deli. If I was, I wouldn't have taken the job. My former job was at Bojangles. I quit there because it did nothing but piss me off. The deli feels the exact same as Bo's. It makes me so angry. The bakery, on the other hand, feels like home. I love it so much. Again, I've mentioned this to both managers. What should I do? Should I tell them I feel like I was hired under false pretenses? Should I look into transferring to a different Kroger?

Deal with it.

The majority of stores it is Deli/Bakery, not 2 seperate entities.  One minute you're baking cookies, the next you're slicing ham, and three minutes after that you're frying chicken, the next thing you know you're writing on a cake, then packaging the chicken you fried before getting back to the cookies and the circle continues.

Kroger loves to "cross-train" people because the turn over is horrible. You're going to get stuck doing the job you hate the most. Going to another Kroger isn't going to change it.

That's the Kroger way.

I am so glad my store isn't combined. When I was hired, a friend of mine told me there was a chance I would be trained in the deli (she worked in a different store) and luckily I've never had to deal with any deli stuff. I'm sorry you're in a store that combines it.

First thing to know here is that, unless you have a piece of paper authoritatively outlining that you will only be doing X, then you will be asked to do other jobs as well.

I get the impression that you are more concerned with doing deli work than hours.  After all, if you were scrounging for hours you probably would be tolerating this a little better.  My advice would be to let management know that this is going to be a problem.  At least at my store we seem to have trouble keeping a cake decorator position filled, so that is possible leverage.

Just because you are trained to do something does not automatically mean it is your job.  I have seen several baggers trained as cashiers, even though it is a violation of our contract for them to actually run a register.  Most of them just don't know enough to say no.  We have a lot of people doing things that they could easily say no to, if they took the time to read the right papers.

Cross-training everyone is a lie. I have spent time in just about each department for some amount of time, each time I was moved I was told that they were cross-training someone to replace me.  As it turns out, I was just moved around to whatever department needed extra help, and nobody was getting cross-training.  I even lucked out and got to be a DSD receiver for a while.  I was told they would have me replaced "with a real employee" within a couple weeks.  At a team huddle a co manager introduced me as a receiver and pronounced that to the team, and talked about cross-training everyone on DSD receiving   I probably did that job for five or six months.

Long story short, take action now or get used to slicing ham.

When asking a legit question, isn't it interesting who is going to be the azzhole in the bunch, or should I say "s".  There are so many mean people in America now, so I hate everyone.  It is easier than picking out the ones I love, so I just hate everyone to make it easier and have less stress.

yea I hear ya on that Anon.  The world is full of A$$holes for sure.  We need another HaleBop Comet to come by and pick up the rest of them huh!

See we live in a secular world.  No faith and no religion required.  People are just plain mean, hateful and spiteful.  Sometimes I fall into that trap myself.  Its the way of the world these days - being self centered and cruel.  Take a look at the recent BUS MONITOR situation and explain that!  Its a shame isn't it.  I got certain people even on here, this silly web site, giving me crap on my approach to things or of being the moderator w/o them knowing a damn thing about me.  It's a form of 'hatred'.  Then, in response, instead of me turning my cheek and ignoring it, I react to it in an almost equally spiteful way.

I know what you are saying in your response.  You post a Q on here and get an A with negativity in it.  I've done it (now with post-regret)!  Also, I have dealt with numerous Kroger staff who when approached with a valid concern give you the cold shoulder and close their door on you like they could give a crap.  I don't necessarily hate everyone but I do hate their behavior.  And I do try to correct them - even if my ways of doing so are somewhat 'unconventional'.

Do not be a cry baby. I work in the dairy. One day we ran out of milk. I was told to go out back and milk the cow. I was never told I would have to milk the cow. I could have just stayed on the farm. Just deal with it and don't be a cry baby.

Talk to the managers thru your supervisor, as chain of command gets you thru the door.  They will tell you, I am sure, this is what the job is and if you don't like it, you know where the door is.  That is just the way it is.  Try to find another that does just what you are trained for and good luck.

Go to the produce department, it's the best department. If you can't deal with the work, your best bet would be a cashier or customer service.
