Transferring to northern California and they want to cut my pay by $6 !!!

My wife and I need to move to northern CA (Sacramento) for family reasons and I have been working in the Los Angeles area for 9 years. I currently top out at $19.80. My union rep and Kroger HR rep said I will have to start at the very beginning again if I transfer to a new location. They say I have to start at $13/hr. The local store is called Foodsco and they said it is under a different union contract than a regular grocery store, such as Ralph's, Safeway, Kroger etc.

I will not be able to support my family with this decreased wage, but have to move. Is there anyone else that has gone through this? Is there anything I can do to keep my wage or at least close to it?

We are only moving to a different city in CA...not even a different state!

Thank you

I support my family on 7.55/hour. You can do it, too. The key? Don't spend so much.

To be fair, the cost of living is probably higher in CA. But still, most of us on here would be thrilled to be making that $13 an hour, lol.

If no one else is making $19.80/hr at the store you're transfering to you're certainly not going to.  Also, the cost of living might be less in Sacramento than it is in Los Angeles.  So the top rate of pay at each store might actually be comparable.

That's total bull**** man. You need to go to the union over that for sure.

Thanks, but I did already talk to the union rep and that's what they said. The sucky thing is, is that the new place I'm transferring actually Tops-out at $19.50 but since I'm new to that store I have to start at the bottom of $13 and then work my way back up to $19. I've been with the company almost 10 years and they are making me start back at the bottom even though the top-out in that area is close to what I already top-out at. So pretty much they are getting an experienced worker for almost half the price.

It will take me another 10 years to top-out again.

It really sucks

Is there a Kroger store near there that is under the same contract that you're currently under?

Have you looked for work elsewhere in Sacramento?

Depending on your postion in Kroger you could play that into something that'll pay comprable to your budget expectations with another employer, the key is negociating your experience in the interview to be a desirable asset.

..Ofcourse that only works if you're an hourly "manager"

if you're just a long time clerk, sorry but you're kind of screwed, it's just the way retail works

Asside from that look into government work the City or County would pay you more tolerably within your requirements (depends on the job, ofcourse)

That's not right at all.  It's not as if you're transfering to a different company.  Nine years experience at one Kroger store should be the same as nine years experience at any other Kroger store.
