The thing about me is no matter what I will always come in on my sixth day when somebody calls in sick. I work in a meat department of course and nobody wants to work Overtime in that department. Well, today seemed like any other day until I got a call around 1 pm yesterday telling me that our nightime guy had called in and asked if I wanted to come in. Like always I assumed this was a full 8 hours. I resisted at first, because of the recent stores my power got knocked out and I have some rotting food in the refridgator. Well, I was working through the shift and on my break the comanager tells me "he can't afford 8 hours of OT" and that "I need to leave as soon as you're done". I was thinking what the hell. Here I am being inconvienced on my off day and then you want to shave 2 hours of OT off. Well, I told my market manager I will no longer come in on my off days anymore and that the comanager who wants to shave my time off can clean up, fill it up, and close it down.

Management is always like that. They will not do any of the things you've told them they will have to do... they will just pull someone off the front end to do it because that's how they operate. They do not care about it just you do and they never will.

They used to call me in a lot on my days off.  Finally, I just got tired of it and quit answering the phone if I knew it was someone from Kroger calling.  If the number on the caller ID says, "Kroger" or if it's a number I don't recognize, I don't answer it.

yea thats a typical kroger co manager. they never think before they speak or act. total idiots - a bag of shelled peanuts in the produce department are smarter then they are

Is your meat dept. a different union than the rest of the store? Either way, he shouldn't be doing the work of any hourly people to avoid overtime. That's the kind of thing that usually gets someone paid, if they choose to grieve it.

on the other hand, they'll probably argue that they let you stay as long as the call-in guarantee and they don't have to give you any more than that.

But if the manager did hourly work, or pulled someone from a department that is a different Local, then that is a problem.

The rest of the store is local 1000 and we're local 540. Therefore it would be a violation of the contract to take someone else from another department. Apparently this Dianne Lewis or whatever her name is doesn't understand the concept of Overtime and why we have it. She is like the Assistant District Manager or something and people supposedly have to call her to explain why the store has overtime. If they're so concerned about the business and helping customers then all upper management needs to report to these departments and start bagging, cashering, slicing, baking, and cutting meat to help the customer in effort to prevent overtime. I don't alway want to work overtime, but if it means helping the customer get what they want i'm all for it.

:D This is not a problem at all. First, please don't assume that being called in on an off day is an automatic 8 hours... unless the union contract specifically stipulates that. Does it?  Here is how I would have dealt with the situation...

Manager: I can't affor to have you here for 8 hours of OT. Please leave as soon as you are done.

Me: Yes, I understand. I have x minutes left for break and willl be at x hours for today. Here is all the tasks that are left for the department.  It needs to be cleaned up, filled up, and closed it down So, how late would you like for me to stay?

Me at end of shift: Hi, how are you. :) Well, sir I am now at 6 hours and I was able to clean up and fill it out.  All that is left is for it to be closed down which normally takes about 2 hours. Do you approve of the extra 2 hours of overtime or would you like me to clock out now?

Guess what? If he says you can leave.. not your problem. :D You offered to stay and you informed him of what was left. Let him deal with the consiquences. You're done son!

Oh and one more thing. You don't even have to come in on your days off. Co-manager should be thankful that you are here to help him out.

In the 7 years with the company to replace one shift with another has always been a full 8 hours up until now. I didn't bother asking because it was always said to be this way. I'm an assistant market manager and I take pride in my work. He had asked me to leave early on the other shift the next day, but I am not going to leave a cooler looking like a wreck! I'm the only person who will come in and close the place down. If I choose to say "no" they're **** out of luck. They literally have nobody else to close it down.

Thats OK AnonymousCutter. Let this person have his "no" until he smartens up and realizes that you might just be the only person and right person for the job. Keep him informed of the needs of the department and let him have the last say so on the appoval of OT. Let him learn this lesson the hard way... After all it will be on him if he denies your stay to finish to job. You did your part - soon he will realize what a mess he made and then remember that you offered to stay. He will then understand fully why he should probably say yes. If he doesn't - well now they just don't hire managers like they used to.

It's all about bonuses.

Seriously: Anything that has to do with pay roll reduction, inadequate environment repairs, replacing equipment, whatever, it's all about how management can pad their bonuses and boost their pay checks. It's always been true to a lesser extent, but in recent years it's gotten WAAAY out of hand. ---- No sign of it stopping, either.

 They seem to be really afraid of upper management, but I am not. They put their pants on one leg at a time I do each morning. If they wish for me to speak on their behalf I will gladly do so. I tell the truth, the truth does hurt in the end. However, it is my duty to inform them of the truth as for I am a realist and don't faulter to the illusions of this world.

Are you referring to your meat market manager or above? I am giving advice on how to deal directly with the blue badges (unit manager, co-managers) in the store. Go over your department head and directly to those in charge of your store. Yes, that is why I was giving you that advice - and in the process get a little more respect for what you do for them. If these guys say to cut the time even after you have had a man to man talk to them well let them deal with the **** till it hits the fan. Good luck!
