I am part time and stock produce. I have been getting about 30 hours per week since working here for six months. My manager says that the available hours for our department are being cut since the summer season is over and its slow. So now I am getting 16 or 17 hours but its not THAT slow. I want to work a second job at another grocery store that is hiring in my area so I asked my manager if I can have a more consistant schedule so I can fit the other job into my schedule. He says that I cannot work for a competitor, its against company policy. So what am I supposed to do ? I can't survive on half the hours I used to get ! My manager says he has no more hours to give me until it gets busy again which may not be until late November. Any advice ?
Learn other departments and let everyone know you're willing to come in if called. Pester them constantly for more hours.
All of this. In our store, dairy dept is constantly having people quit or refuse to work there because of the manager. Grocery/Frozen/Dairy..learn them and love them.
iv'e heard this from a kroher manager hiself.. "managers have a set amount of money they can spend on employees a month (set hours=set money). Whatever money/hours isnt used at the end of the month the manager gets to take home."

I also work 2 jobs. I work overnights @ Kroger, then head to my day job. Company policy states you that can't work for their grocery competitors, (Bi-Lo, Food Lion, Piggly-Wiggly, etc) but that does not mean you cannot use your skills as a stocker/replenisher in the retail business. Many retail leaders are are hiring now (or will be in the next few weeks) for Seasonal Holiday positions. This is the perfect time of year to find that perfect 2nd job. (Target, Wal-Mart, Kohl's, Toys-R-Us, etc). I suggest you search for job openings in your zip code @ www.snagajob.com or www.indeed.com. Or you can go directly onto a retailer's website and apply online there.
Also, did you know that you may be able to file for Partial Unemployment Benefits? I see that you have been working @ Kroger for ony 6 months, but if you have a prior work history, where your previous employer paid into unemployment, there may be benefits under your account. If this applies to you, go to the Unemployment/Job Service in your area and apply.
Good Luck to you and remember to TEMORARILY adjust your availability on your eschedule. Mine @ Kroger is set for only overnight hours, (12am-8am). I hope I've helped you.
Wal-Mart is a national competitor (predator) with EVERY business, but it is a known retail "Department Store", not a grocery business. "Target" is also a Department Store and both have a grocery area within their stores.
If your second job is Wal-Mart or Target or ANY place that sells groceries, let's hope your Kroger boss doesn't find out. I highly doubt if he/she would share your views~
Nearly every national retail convenience store, gas station and Dollar General have a grocery section in their establishment, but that does not classify them as a "grocery store" nor make them a competitor of Kroger.
Wal-Mart, Target and K-Mart are no different and their grocery areas are only a portion of their overall sales. Kroger does not have shoe, electronics, or sporting goods departments.
Kroger's "grocery" competitors would be classified as Aldi's, Bi-Lo, Winn-Dixie, Harris-Teeter, Piggly-Wiggly, Ingle's, etc.
I work at a retail outlet as my day job and yes, I stock groceries there. Kroger is my 2nd job and I have worked for the other retailer for 6 years. Upon my initial interview with Kroger management, I informed them that I was currently employed with this other known retailer. Kroger is thrilled to have my stocking experience and offered me the job I now hold.

Here's what i've heard on why they're cutting hours. The Managers and Comanagers work 50+ hours a week and they give their "overtime" for free. The hours cut goes towards their bonus. Well, I feel sorry for them in the future. If they try and call me in for overtime i'm going to tell them the comanager can earn it since hes working overtime to earn that bonus.

This is precisely why shop stewards should not allow management to do ANY hourly labor. Anybody who sees that happening should report it immediately.
Delilah Rose is right you can work at Kroger and also work at Wal-mart too. We just got a new hire on our over night stock crew and his day job is Wally World!!!
On a couple rare occasions i've had a co-manager stop by to help me just for a few minutes if they want cakes or something put out on display. Does this mean they aren't really supposed to be doing that?
Did anyone on this Forum have International Workers in their Kroger stores this summer? We had the Russians, Bulgarians and the Irish in our stores and they were under some sort of guaranteed 4o hour contract, while the regular, American Kroger employees had their hours reduced.
With a sagging economy such as ours today, why is Kroger participating in this "exchange program". These International employess were NOT students and many of them worked 2-3 jobs while here. PLUS, they paid no taxes!
We American workers were told that when these International employees returned to their homelands, our hours would then increase each week, because those workers would no longer be included in the schedule. We were lied to.....we American workers have not seen an increase in our scheduled hours for the last 3 weeks and several employees have had their hours reduced even further and are only getting 12 hours/week.
I would wait until you got a call back from where you applied, and if they offer you a spot. I would take it. Pretty much everywhere will pay you more than Kroger (where I live, McDonalds pays more :/ ) and I mean at least you'll get more than 17-18 hours a week.
