Am I too sensitive?

I'm a guy who works in the bakery department as baker, but I can do most everything else except make a rose because my hands are too hot.    Why is it if I'm there by myself and someone hands me cake  to have something written on it they always seem to question my ability to do a good job?  We have three cake decorators and my cake writing skills are better than two of them.  The third one does really nice writing.   Every time I hand the cake back to the customer they're always so surprised that it looks so good.  I don't know if I should be grateful or insulted.   One customer actually had the nerve to ask for someone else to write on her cake.  So I asked a girl in the deli, who I knew couldn't write on cake worth a darn, to do it.

When I worked in the deli, as the only guy in the dept., I would have customers come up to the counter when my back was turned and say "Mam, can you help me?"

Then I'd turn around and embarass them when they realized their mistake.  It was funnier when they asked it after I hadn't shaved for a few days.

Yeah, you are being a bit sensitive.

Baking, and especially cake decorating, are more traditionally feminine activities.

By actively participating, and particularly by excelling, you are defying gender norms.

This doesn't mean you aren't awesome at it.  As always, it means customers are ****ing idiots.

Be grateful that someone recognizes that you aren't a complete ****up, as many Kroger employees are.

You are feeling what most people of the opposite gender have felt when performing a job that was once believed to be traditionally male or female.

I don't think you're being sensitive, but you should not be feeling any self-doubt, either. It sounds as if your doing a excellent job. I can't help but feel you'd excel in any position you held at Kroger.

You sound like a smart guy and you'll figure out a way to build the best rose.

As a female who has worked in traditionally male dominated fields for the past 15 years what you're feeling is absolutely normal. I don't think you're being sensitive. If they question it, smile cheerfully and tell them while you are fantastic at your job and with cake writing you would be more than happy to have someone else do it for them.

Aww, I don't think you're being too sensitive, it has to be an odd position to be in.

I work in the bakery department and we don't have any guys back there at all, six women in the bakery, and seven or so women in the deli too. One of our co-managers started in the bakery and he's the only guy I've known of to work in the bakery, I wonder why that is though. I don't see how being a baker is a more "feminine" job at all. It sounds like you're great at the job and thats all that matters :D
