New hire in produce
Permalink

So I start my orientation Wednesday.  I was told I would be doing stuff on the computer before actually working in produce.  Are these learning classes or something ?  How long does the computer training last ?  Is there more to produce than just stocking ?  I am just wondering what to expect.

CBT's take as long as you drag them out. The new hire stuff takes awhile, plus there are some videos about FAST and workplace violence. I don't know how long produce takes, but grocery was long, not nearly as long as pharmacy though. I've never worked produce (thank God) but it's one of the busier areas in my store, as is dairy, so expect a lot of customer contact. Don't get too uptight about your displays because customers have a nasty habit of buying things and will mess them up.

But most importantly....KEY RETAILING, take it seriously!! We hear this at all of our huddles I'm sure you will too.

Good luck. CBTs are a complete snooze fest, enjoy Bob! :)

I have worked in produce for almost 3 years. Make sure you use a blue cart at all times!!! Make sure you have two bananas on your cart + a black crate + a RPC (which is an empty banana box) to put bad product in while your stocking apples, lettuce and etc.  Rotate everything you touch, say you get apples out of the back when you go to stock them you take all the apples off put the ones from the box down then the ones you pulled you put on top of the new ones.  Truck days are Sunday, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. If you get stuck doing the truck or helping the guy make sure you have a black marker and put the date in the top right corner say Thursday you are doing the load, make sure you put 25th on it with a black marker.   If I can think of anything else I will post back it has been a very long day.

Hope this helps you a little.

Produce isn't too bad, it's my department at my store. Best advice is make sure you know the key retailing stuff, there's nothing worse than getting busted not doing something right. Also 5S is important you lose points in an audit for not having it right, but also it annoys the crap out of me when the last person to work didn't clean up their mess and I spend 30 minutes cleaning just so I can start working. Also in produce be ready to deal with lots of customers, our store is setup to force customers to go through produce when they come in the store so not only do I get produce I get people looking for other item also. Just remember that it is as good as you make it. I love it, now there are days that Re bad but for the most part it is a lot of work but can be enjoyable.
