May be getting Fired...

Hi. I've been working at kroger for a little over a year now. I was promoted to grocery a couple months ago, and I've been doing great. I get all my work done on time, all the dept. managers have good things to say about me and I've never gotten into trouble... except last night...

Last night after I clocked out, I went to say goodbye to my boyfriend who works in the meat dept. I kissed him in the backroom and it ended up turning into a makeout session... The new manager caught us... :( She said it was going to be reported and we may be fired... I'm scared. I'm on the verge of homelessness right now, and I may be losing my job because of my stupidity... It's already been rumored that we've done this multiple times (which we haven't) but now it just looks terrible on our part... He's been with the company for 10 years and I would feel awful if he lost his job...

Is there anything I can do? I'm an honest worker and I love the people at my job. They're like a family and I don't want to lose them...

This was after you clocked out, so they cannot fire you for something you did off the clock.

Your boyfriend has been there for 10 years, so it is unlikely that he will be fired.

My suggestion: Go to the union, state your case, fight for your job, and be careful in the future.

If your bf was on the clock, it's his butt on the line. You weren't on the clock, so they can't do anything to you. My bf works in a different dept and we give each other a peck whenever one or the other of us is leaving, but we don't go into full on makeout mode. I'd be careful with that while inside the store at all. PDA's are usually frowned upon in any workplace, but it's still your right as long as it doesn't get vulgar....

Oh, they most certainly can. Few years back, 2 employees got in a fight in the parking lot. One was off and out of uniform. The other was in uniform and on break. They were both fired. Not forced to resign. Fired. The company line is that when you're on the premises or in uniform anywhere, you're representing kroger.

The difference is that it was a display of violence and it was out in the parking lot for everyone to see. Kroger has a zero tolerance policy toward violence and is grounds for immediate discharge.

Very true, but my point was really that it's a dangerous thing to think and act like you can't get in trouble for something. A peck on the cheek is no big deal, but I'd pretty much expect to get in trouble for a makeout session on the clock, though she was off the clock so she's probably safe. For the guy, he'll probably just get a write-up, tops. Unless the boss forgets, which happens. I've seen veteran employees fired for less, though, so we'll see.

If it's a brand new manager just out of the training program they're more likely to go ahead with reporting the incident and proceeding with any disciplinary actions that result from it.  A manager who's been with the company a long time is more likely to just give you a slap on the wrist.  New managers like to make their mark.

You could say that you were giving him a kiss good-bye. More than two kisses can be considered "making out".

NOOO!!! Don't say anything but say "WHAT THE F*CK ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT?" if they call you up to the office.  They can not prove anything so just deny it till the day you die - well at least for 10 days.  After ten days from when it happened you are clear.
