Charging employees for sink water
Permalink

Ever since I've started working at Kroger 4 years ago, the sink water from Starbucks has always been free. It's just water from the sink, after all. But last week, management apparently took all the Starbucks employees upstairs and told them they're going to have to start charging 30 cents for water. Seriously?? It's water from a sink!  At first I thought that maybe it had to do with their cups, which made sense, but when I brought in my own water bottle to fill up they said they were still going to have to charge me.

I went to Giant Eagle and I bought a bunch of water bottles which I now take to work with me. Kroger is being greedy and I'm not going to buy my water from them if that's how they're going to act.

Y cant you go to the water fountain and fill up there? or the bakery? or the bathroom if its just sink water? Maybe they are taking too much time out of their day filling everybody's water bottles up so they are charging just to get people to go away? lol just guessing

We could, but it just seems weird to me to start charging after all this time.

Maybe they figured people would pay for "Starbucks water" even if it's just sink water like in the rest of the store. tho it is kind of odd that they're charging for Starbucks and not for anywhere else in your store. Are they charging customers too?

I wouldn't drink anything out of the water fountain if I were you. Ours are disgusting. People sticking gum on them, little kids licking the part where the water comes out of, people putting their mouths right up on it.. bleh

Is Starbucks charging their employees for the water they used to wash their hands in the same sink? I think not....

I have yet to hear about any starbucks that would charge 30 cents for a cup of water. Hell, they typically sell a single bottle of Kroger water for $.50 most of the time.

Completely ridiculous to charge for water, more ridiculous not to use the fountain. It should get cleaned, or just fill your water bottle at home, or bring a couple bottles full, if you need that much. Invest in a filter pitcher for the break room and take turns replacing the filter. Seriously. This shouldn't even be an issue.

It's just a control issue.

kroger has to be in control, or it drives them nuts.

what I don't get, is why star bucks goes along with it

I wouldn't, if i were them. it's their water, they rent the space

Were all you lazies getting water from starbucks while on the clock? Cause it sounds like too many employees were going over to starbucks and not buying anything. Trashing their filters and cups, taking up space, feeling entiltled.

It depends on the managers mostly. we have a button for iced water on our register and I have also received emails on our water policy, stating to charge .30, sent by kroger. I think it's to deter employees from taking away from customer time but also  I suppose you're paying for the cup, not so much the water. in the last few years, it went from being free, to .30, to no water at all from starbucks, back to free. Lol. Our employee discount on drinks changes non stop too. It's a stupid system

When I was a courtesy clerk, I would take a large cup from the soda area near our Starbucks-deli area, walk down to the meat department, fill the cup with crushed ice, then use the water fountain or even a sink (usually in the break room) to fill it with water.

It had to be done sometimes when the Front End Supervisors weren't keeping good enough track of how much water we had in the hot temperatures. A lot of times, we'd have to self-police as courtesy clerks. This way I at least had something cold to drink.
