I'm on vacation and I'm in VA Beach. I just went to a/the VA Beach Kroger tonight and I totally nerded out and went and checked out there deli even though I was only there for the beer. They had BH Head Cheese (which I'd heard of but never seen before and, uh: ew). I noticed their chicken warmer by the registers is bi-leveled, with hot on top and cold bunker on bottom. Crazy!
Anyway, what are your impressions of different stores and what's the furthest store from yours that you've visited, whether to work or shop?
I live west of Sugarland, Texas and Kroger hired many people for their new store in the Houston Heights. I was one of them and I have to deal with the daily commute to the store. I work the primetime hours and that involves taking rush hour traffic to a location right next to a major highway.
It's not hard for me to visit other Krogers...we have three Krogers within 4 miles of each other. How silly is that? The Kroger I work at is the biggest one, it's a marketplace. The one to the north of us is nice, but the deli looks like it may as well be a dungeon in a basement somewhere! It's very drab and dim. The one to the west of us isn't that great all around.

living in the cincinnati area, there are tons of kroger stores any which way you turn. each one is a little different then the next. as you drive 20 to 30 miles out into the boon docks and hit a Kroger store - thats where u see a real change.

One thing I've always said...NOT ONE KROGER is the exact same as another Kroger...People think they're working for ONE COMPANY, but in reality, it's more like a hodgepodge of unique stores within that company...I've been in lots of stores, and each one is different in it's own way. Some have amenities like salad bars, olive bars, sushi bars, and the like...The more upscale stores, that is...Some have their departments located along the store's perimeter, like seafood, meat, and deli. Some have their bakeries and delis toward the center of the store. Some have big banks in store. Some have very small banks. Some don't have a bank at all. Some stores carry some very unique items. Others are just bare bones, with a limited selection. Some have a large floor space, and small coolers and backrooms. Some have large backrooms, with a small sales floor. Some were built as Krogers. Others were remodeled into Krogers, from stores that went by the wayside. And according to the management style, location (geography), employees, etc., each one is run in a slightly different fashion than the next one. But employees at each store feel their store's way is the right way. I've seen some stores that are strict about certain things, only to go to another store, and see their employees are lax about the same things...Very inconsistent! Any clues as to why that is? I'm only speculating here, but I would venture to guess that most employees have never even visited another Kroger, other than their own, and they might be surprised to see how different the stores look in comparison, and how they are run...It really is an eye-opener, if you think about it...But that's just my two cents...
A good example of the above poster's description is one of the Kroger stores here: It was remodeled from an Eagle Food store, so there are the architecural differences. Also, as with the Eagle store, it services a more up scale demographic, which affects the quality food selection. The prices are much higher on certain items too.
