I just have a little beef about customers that come in 5-15 minutes before close. They expect us to stay open just for them even though we come up to them and tell them "pay now or leave." We usually make a P.A. system announcement for the last 30 minutes, the last 15 minutes, 10 minutes, 5 minutes...closed! People still have cart fulls of stuff 5 minutes AFTER we close..
If you have a perpetual problem with this constantly, you should start including in your last few pages that "there will be no checkout after the store closes" and enforce it because you are within your rights to do that.
Or do what I do: We close at 12 midnight 11:43 i page for 11:45 11:47 i page for 11:50 11:51 i page for 11:55 11:55 i page for closed and turn off the doors this keeps people 5 min ahead and is very helpful

We've had a problem with that for a good month. Sometimes we have to stay 10-15 minutes overtime. Customers don't listen. They don't regard the messages at all and they don't take them seriously. A customer with her half-cart full of stuff came to the checkout when the cash drawer was halfway to where it's kept overnight. Since our Kroger expanded, it's much harder to keep track of customers.
Tell them no. Like I said, assuming you close at midnight, you are fully within your rights to wait til 12:00 on the dot, walk up to them, grab their cart, and tell them the store is closed and they need to leave. They have no repercussions. They can call corporate and complain, but I'm pretty sure that isn't us doing something wrong, but instead is them upset they're not getting something they're not SUPPOSED to get, and I'm betting corporate just discards those complaints without another thought.
I work the closing shift at my store and when there are customers I page at 12:45, 12:50, 12:55, and 12:58. (we close at 1) I say the uscan registers will be turned off in ____ minutes so come to checkout at this time. if they are not at the checkout by 1 I turn the registers off and they are out of luck. If they run over, I give them til 1:05 and tell them they need to pay for what they have and come back in the morning for the rest of the items or I have to void what they scanned and come back for all of it. sometimes i make people mad, but i tell them they have 18 other hours to shop, and sometimes the registers really do reboot at 1:01am
