Walmart is worser than Kroger.

Been hearing a lot on the news prior to Thanksgiving about Walmart employees walking out on Black Friday, protesting over wages, hours, working Thanksgiving, and getting nothing to show for it, etc....Don't know what the actual turn out of employees was, but you guys have any thoughts, pro or con on this?

i'm glad to see employees standing up for themselves. It's scary to stand up to your employeer. All my heart be with them.

I hate to have such a negative attitude but...
While these employees have very valid points, I heard some of them on the news asking for $13 an hour.

No retail store is going to start employees at $13 an hour. Walmart won't, Kroger won't. It sadly just won't happen. And the ones who have been there enough time to get that $13 an hour, get more benefits than the part timers already I'm sure. :X

Walmart can't be a fun place to work at. But if you're looking to get rich, retails not the place for that :(

Thats funny because im employed with Kroger and I make $13.35 / hr and ill be at $13.75 in April. Its possible. if they would just stiff their shareholders instead of being greedy.

 But not everybody is making $13.35 or higher.  Kroger can afford to pay the long term employees higher wages because there's fewer of them than there are part time workers or full time workers who haven't topped out yet.  If you're paying the majority of your workers less than $8.00/hr. you can afford to pay the others who have stuck it out a higher wage.

 But I would almost guarantee that you didn't START at $13/hr.

 The issue is not whether Walmart or Kroger can affor to pay that kind of money; the issue is, non salaried help is unskilled labor (except for butchers/meat cutters). Any job that can be instantly replaced with absolutely no drop in productivity and profit will likely never pay very much.

Sad, but true.

My beef w/ the whole stupid Walmart walkout is this-

Walmart starts out their employees a bit over min. wage, thats better than Kroger.

Walmart was whining about working on Thanksgiving..so what? so did we.

Walmart employees are saying that they have to be on medicaid/foodstamps while they work there. And? so do most the "28 hr." Kroger employees. they have to have their kids if they have any on gov. health plans b/c they dont have family ins. and on 28 hrs. and min. wage they sure are not making enough to pay bills, and for food. I work w/ alot that are on foodstamps.

They dont treat you right? well, right now, most companies dont. Your a body, a very replacable one.

So STFU and GBTW!!

 I think bakers and cake decorators should be considered skilled labor.  Not everyone can do it, even with training.

Congrats! :) You're lucky to be getting that much.

But... how long did it take to get to that point? That's all I'm saying. Retail can't pay EVERY employee that much money. It would be nice, I wish they could, but it just ain't gonna happen.

Overall I really have to agree with TheCaker. If they don't like working at walmart, then look for a job that's "better than retail".

I originally started out as Courtesy Clerk with no experience back in December of 2005 and got moved up fairly quick. In 3 months I moved up to a cashier and 3 months later they put me in Meat Department. I was making $5.15 / hr with no experience and the fact that this was my first job ever to work. Over a course of 5 years my pay went up every 6 months until I topped out at $12.15 / hr. I got promoted on my 6th year as a Assistant Market Manager and got bumped up to $13.15 / hr and added some extra job security. I don't expect Courtesy Clerks to make $12 - $13 / hr here in Texas.

 It was a great big noisy fart started on line. I'm not against where those people were coming from----they had valid points----but we're talking about three things here: Total lack of real organization/monetary base (which as we all know, is the only force that moves anything in this country any more) ;  a buncha people who were NO WAY going to walk off of any job, where there's no others to be found......and a corporation that is worth almost ONE TRILLION DOLLARS.

I'm not saying that change in Wal-Mart can't happen, or even that it shouldn't----but it's going to take a much bigger push than an internet threat to make it happen.
