Will I get fired for this?

So I just became a cashier about 3 weeks ago. On this weeks schedule they finally have me as a full time cashier on the schedule because before I was a courtesy clerk and a cahsier. Anyway tonight I had a lady that came to me and her transaction was $28 she paid with a $100 bill I gave her change which was like $72. 20 mins later she comes back and is like I only gave her $52 she shows me her reciept. SO i gave her a $20 back. Afterwards when I didnt have a customer in line I asked 2 of my supervisors about what I did. One was doing accounting the other was working customer service. They both told me I shouldnt have done that because my till could of come up short. I told them I didnt know I couldn't I never was told what I could do and what I can't I had no clue I couldnt do that. Well my supervisor in customer service was like dont worrry about it. It wasa learning experience since Iam still new to this and I learned from it. The other supervisor in accounting was also like dont worry about it the worse they could do is write me up or isolate me which she told me means I get put on my own till for a few days so they could watch me. I was wondering what is the worst they could do to me? Could I get fired for it? I mean I had no clue I couldnt do this and I mean I learned from my mistake so also what should I do?

Also I forgot to mention that my supervisor who was working accounting counted the till after I had told her about it apparently the till came up $56 short

Never ever take a dispute on how much change you gave a customer.  Send them to customer service or call a manager.  Once they leave all issues about a transaction are not for you to deal with.

I wouldn't be surprised if she was trying to scam you because they knew you were a relatively new cashier.

$56 short is a huge deal.  $30 would definitely get you written up.  That you weren't just $20 short is alarming.

Were you the only one on that till?

There are company set goals for the front end in terms of shortages.  $56 is above what I saw in the last communication.  I think that was $50 for a week or month.  I think they have to report anything over $25 in a day and explain why it happened.

I think I was the third person on that till I know we usually only have 3 people on one till before we pull it and I was the last person on it for the night. Well yeah I learned my lesson like I said I had no clue I was suppose to call someone over they never told me. I just assumed to value the customer well I learned my lesson. Never trust customers!

Dont really know how your store staff is going to handle this situation......may i suggest that in the future when your finalizing a transaction.....say how much the sale is.....how much the customer gave you.....and how much the change is......and count out the bills when you give it back to the customer instead of just handing them the bill in a bunch......if it was an honest mistake....I seriously doubt that this will hurt you.......unless you work for some real hard cases.......live .....learn ......and keep on going.

Even if the customer is right and you did give back the incorrect amount of change, you never hand it to them out of your till.  Always call a supervisor and have them count your till.

im a cashier and i got cash scammed once. it's when 2 people come up and want to make change for a $50 and then while youre counting one tries to distract you and says you counted wrong and then change their mind and want change for 100 instead and want the 50 back..eventually they get you to give them too much change back for the large bill they wanted broken. it sounds really stupid when typed out and you think you will never ever fall for it but i did. i told my supervisor immediatly after it happened and she took the till and counted it and it ended up being $50 short. it was extremely embarassing but luckily they weren't mad because i told them what happened.

in the end i decided i'm not making change for people when not in a transaction and if anyone has a question about the amount of $ i give them, i send them to customer service and let management deal with it.

This has gotten to the point that it is our stated distric policy to not give change outside of an order.

I've had this happen. It's really annoying and i just gave everyones money back refusing to do anything complex.

About your situation OP, well. You've learned something important never trust people on their word. ever. As future advice learn how much you can give back on a check and on EFT. Checks are really annoying if you don't know about all the little things and aren't very observant.

Always count your money twice. If somebody does that again call a manager to get it ok'ed.

Always always always do this.

I like to fan out the cash given to me.  Usually that's enough to see if they gave me what they intended and that it's enough for the transaction.  Sometimes I'll see they gave me too many twenties.

Count your money both when you take it from the drawer and when you hand it over.  Sometimes I find a brand new dollar bill stuck to another when doing this.

Also don't ever let anyone change what they're giving you after your drawer opens.  I'm always getting people trying to do that.  I just tell them it's too late and I'm going to give them what the register says.  Letting them do that just opens too many opportunities for scams.

If a customer wants me to break a bill, I do it after the transaction and reopen the drawer so I'm not trying to both make change and break the bill how they want it.

Stay focused.  Keep it simple.  If you have to ignore what they're saying while the drawer is open do it.

I was scammed once before out of $10. It was a lady that was buying beer. She seemed nice, so I didn't think nothing of it. I didn't get in trouble for it, but I was told to have customer service count my till.

The next time, a guy tried to scam me out of $20. A lady let him in front of her because he had only one item. He paid for that item with a $100 bill. The item was only like $4.99 or something like that. I gave him his change, and he put it in his pocket. Then he pulled it back out, and I saw that it was not what I gave him. I told him that I would have to have my till counted.

"Well, how long's that gonna take?"
"I'm not a magician."

After I brought my till to the customer service desk, he went out the door screaming, "You know what?! KEEP the money!" By that time the lady behind him had left. My till came out perfect.

I try to make it a point not to make change for a customer, unless it's part of the transaction. I'm too lazy to fiddle with all that anyway.

No one has ever told me not to do it.  In fact, they'll send me people to break bills specially if customer service isn't open yet or has closed for the night.  USCAN has done it too.
I had a supervisor exchange for a dollar coin that was in my till before too.

All day, every day, at my store. Our CS desk is far too busy to be getting on the register, really at all. Except for the morning lady. She will jump on a register when 1 lane has been at 1+2 for about 3.4 sec and one of those is grabbing their purse to leave. She always seems to do it at the exact time when someone is about to come up to the desk, and when they do, she just pretty much ignores them. Also, she completely skips calling relief help and will do this when we have a cc who is trained to check emptying a trashcan like 2 checklanes away.

If it keeps happening yes. But the service desk can do a till exchange and count your till and see if the lady way telling the truth or not

I have people try to do this me all the time. I NEVER put the money given to me in the till until AFTER I give them their change. I set it on the counter above the till in plain sight of the cameras, count it to myself, count it in front of them, hand them the change, THEN put it in the drawer. And I NEVER brek it down any further than that. They telll me what they want BEFORE I open the drawer and thats what I give them. After that, I send them to customer service.

Its usually the same couple who tries to do this to me and all the cashiers were told about them and to do what I do after I saw them trying to do it to anew cashier and stepped in to help her. She reported them and we were all briefed on what to do. They usually want change for a 100 or 50 in seemingly random amounts of each bill that usualy adds up to more than their original bill.

If anyone ever comes back and questions the change you gave them or says you gave them the wrong amount, send them to customer service. They will count your till and determine if you owe the customer money or not. I did this too on my first day but my supervisor saw me opening the drawer to give him more money and stopped me and asked for my till.
