How can I deal with an unfriendly work environment?

I just started working for Kroger in the grocery department and so far there haven't been any problems with the quality of my work. But it is difficult to get along with my co-workers socially. They just don't appear to be very friendly and whenever I have greeted some of them, they frown at me or pretend that they did not hear. Then there are the ones who will just stare at me as if to say: "you shouldn't be working here."

I am not interested in making the best of friends with my co-workers because I only want to work here temporarily. But I am the type of person who will at least make the attempt to be sociable and friendly and not make critical judgements of the people I work with. I probably need to grow a thicker skin and just accept it, but I don't know why it seems that I'm the only one that people hate at my workplace.

Do you have any suggestions about getting along with your co-workers?

Try to find out if you have anything in common and show interest in anything about them that you find interesting.

-Do they have a hairstyle that you want to try?
-Do they do something extremely well?
-Do they have any clothing that you might want to buy?
-Do they have any hobbies or interests that you have as well?

Then, try and strike up a conversation.

If you think you're the only person people hate at your workplace then ask yourself why.  Do you talk excessively?  I know a woman who talks non-stop and she gets on everyone's nerves.  Do you ask too many personal questions?  Many people like to keep their work life and their home life completely separate.  Remember, you're there to do a job, not to socialize.  Keep non-work related conversation to a minimum.

Some people are very clique-ish, and take a long time to warm up to new folks. I wouldn't let it get under your skin.

Good responses / advise from the others so far - here is mine.  The world is like a rainbow....

But hey, just keep on doing what you are doing and don't perceive that they are being dispondent to you.  Keep chatting to those you think are worth your attention otherwise keep your nose to the grindstone.  Don't butt in to other people's conversations.  Just make casual small talk to those people you think have some common bond like sports or family or whatever.  A lot of people are quite honestly very shallow individuals and have nothing really to add to the world but to take up space.  You can quickly figure out who those people are.  Others think they know it all and are the roster of the coop.  Stay away from them and their gossip.  Then there are those that are down to earth just working away like you are.  It's everywhere.  Well anyways,  best of luck and I'm sure you will find one or two good decent people to shoot the crap with.  And you are always welcome on here.  We shoot the crap here all the time biggrin

Tell them about your knife/gun/or Barbie doll collections (or all three!) .. and maybe they will tell you about their stamp/midget p0rn collection, etc., type hobby. :)

One time they hired a girl in my department and she wouldn't speak to me from her first day.  Never met her before in my life and she said she had moved in from out of state a half year before so it's not like she went to my school and I'd forgotten her.  She was friendly with everyone else, saccaharine even, but to me? Not a word.  Still not sure what I did to warrant the silent treatment - we've spoken since then, but we don't get along.
