Major Decision, Need Advice!

     I've been working for Kroger on the Night Stock crew, but it's totally not what I signed up for. I was told I would be working 17-30 hours a week, but I'm averaging 45 hours. Some nights they have me work 8 hours, go home for a few hours, then come back and work another 8 hours. They hate it when I call in because there are only 5 people on the Night Stock crew, and they always need all of them to work. But even when everyone's working, it still takes us 8-10 hours to get all the work done for the night, especially when someone calls in and they put the "manager" on the stock crew, as he just sits in his office, so there are only 4 of us. Add in the awful pay, the rude superiors, and the pointless "union", and I have myself a terrible job!

 

     Anyway, McDonalds offered me a job, and they said I could either be a 3rd shift Cook or Cashier. I told my supervisor at Kroger that I'm quitting. I made up some lie about how I simply found a job that I think will suit me better, but really I'm quitting because working for Kroger freakin' SUCKS.

 

     So she offered me a job as a Cashier at Kroger. She said I'd be ringing people up, bagging, getting carts from outside, cleaning the store, etc. Should I take the job, or should I go with McDonalds? If I go with McDonalds, should I go for Cook or Cashier? And if I do accept Kroger's Cashier job, will they work me as much as they possibly can? I freaking hate that. I was told I'd only be working 17-30 hours... And I have a best friend who cashier'd at Walmart for a few years, then tried cashiering at Kroger. He walked out on his second day, and never went back.

 

     So what should I do? Cashier at Kroger, or Cashier or Cook at McDonalds? Help =(

i applied for 20-30 hours so i would stay part time and have time t do school work too. they like to work me at 38-40 hours for 11 weeks and then give me 6-15 hours the 12th week. at my store you are automatically full time if you wotk 35+ hours 12 weeks straight. then on the 13th week, im at 38 hours again.

 

 

you will make WAAY less than you deserve for the crap you put up with as a cashier.

 

I worked at Wendy's for a while as a cashier as it is so much easier and I quickly was about to move up the ranks to a shift manager with great pay. I wish i still had that job, but i was transferred to a wendys far away and couldnt afford to move.


 

These were my thoughts as well.

 

My mother's been trying to get me to take the Kroger Cashier job, because she cashier'd at Kroger when she was young, but Kroger isn't how she remembers it being... It's a place where workers go to die now, basically.

 

I'll go with McDonalds! Should I be a cook or cashier? =\

This. One day, I was conditioning/facing the aisles while everyone else was breaking down the truck. I had just finished aisle 3, and one of the managers came out of his office and down my aisle to talk to me. He said, "This job is more lifting than you expected, isn't it?" I wanted to punch him in the face. There's no need to make fun of my size. I've always had a small frame, and I'm sensitive about it.

 

Anyway, then he looked at the aisle, and he told me that I had conditioned it incorrectly, and I would have to do it again. He went back to his office, and I went on my lunch break, furious. I came back from my lunch break, and was getting ready to start "re-conditioning" the aisle, however you're supposed to do that, and the manager came back down the aisle. He was like, "Ah, it looks much better."

 

I see that happen a lot... for instance, I'll be stacking things on the backstock cart, and one of my superiors will be like, "That's not how you're supposed to do it," and they'll unstack ALL of it, then they'll restack it the same freaking way!

 From my experiance (at WENDYS), cashiers had a lot more freedom to move around and be useful than cooks. depending on whether youll be the one coming and making "eggs" and "biscuits" in the morning, youll probably just be standing in one spot putting together burgers without having to move around at all. cashiers have more to do though: cleaning the dining room, take orders, check orders before they go out, cleaning the front counter, making drinks, making cash drops, etc. Cooks just made the orders, iped down the counters and left.

 

But this was at WENDYS, though im sure McDonalds is relaticely similiar.

cashiering was fun.  then i got moved to uscan and all that enjoyment is gone now.  

it's a pain because managers who are never on the floor are always criticizing.  I'm afraid if i say no more uscan I'll lose my hours.  I saw that happened to two others.

There are many things that are more important to me than the overtime I work... I don't care if it pays more, or whatever. Those are hours I DON'T want to be working, hours I would have spent actually living my life instead of being a slave to some company.

Meh its not really that bad... they actually got onto me for working 2 - 8 hours shifts in 1 day! :(

I'm a Kroger cashier.  I've done it a bit more than a year, and I'm about done with it.

It's easy, but it's boring, and you deal with crazies, idiots, *******s, old people (I really hate old people) and people who don't speak English all day long.

Hours vary violently.  At my store, sometimes you get a whole week off, or overtime every week for a few months.

Do you know the front end managers or the store manager?  How they run the show makes a big difference on how awful it is.

My mother's been trying to get me to take the Kroger Cashier job, because she cashier'd at Kroger when she was young, but Kroger isn't how she remembers it being...

That's funny.  At one time, you could actually make a living working here.  Isn't that crazy?

Yes, I find that to be very crazy. And yeah, I know how the managers run the place: they exploit their employees however they can. They'll work you 40 hours or more every week for 11 weeks, then give you 20 hours the 12th week to avoid having to give you full-time benefits, and they HATE when you try to call in. Basically, they expect each and every employee to be a slave to their company. I'm a college student... I don't have time to work 45 hours a week because Kroger would rather work a few employees to death than hire a few extra guys to ease the load on everyone.

 

Basically, Kroger makes money in two ways: 1) exploiting their customers, and 2) exploiting their employees.

and i'm sure that working at mcdonald's will be a paradise compared to kroger......lol

i'm saying there's going to be a lot of stupid crap at mcdonald's to put up with too, unless they're offering you a shift manager or something it's probably not a move worth making. every job like this is going to have you working hours you don't want (like saturday night, sunday morning and so on)

i've never been a cashier but i talk to the girls up front and some of them don't mind it and others can't stand it. all depends on your personality i guess? it's just what it sounds like, you stand in a spot for 8 hours and scan groceries and take money and count change and the customers complain to you (pro tip: the customers complain about stupid crap at literally every store, to anyone who looks like they will listen - there are certainly going to be complaining customers at mcdonald's too if that's the issue)

as far as the hours you don't want, are you in school or something? if so then talk to HR and store management (not your department head) about your availability. as a part time employee you are not obligated to have open availability. that said, the managers tell me that they write the schedule "according to the needs of the business", so bear this is in mind as you think about what days and times you cannot work

Actually, I know someone who works both part time at both Kroger and McDonald's.

I asked her which job she has more BS at.

She said Kroger.

Had you not told me the answer, I would have bet like $500 on Kroger. Every person I've ever known who's worked at Kroger has quit without giving them notice. But they've worked other places just fine, including McDonalds.

Anyway, I'm sure McDonalds will be better. I know the manager there, which is how I'm getting on, and it's a more community-oriented McDonalds. It's also the only fast-food restaurant in my hometown, and I know some of the people there.

So it'll be better.

yea maybe with McDonalds you can gradually move up into shift supervisor then manager.
