I want a second job at nights but I know kroger has a thing in the rule book about how you can face termination for working at another grocery store , does anyone actually follow this or do they do that to scare you ?

Whether or not most stores follow that rule religiously, breaking it would be a stupidly avoidable, needless risk. Your current management may not care, but all it takes is someone to go on vacation, and a relief manager overhear where you have a second job, report it to corporate, and you're out the door that day with a pink slip.

actually corporate will know as soon as the second job files your W-2.

if you have any doubts just avoid obvious competitors like other grocery stores and walmart.

you can always ask if the other employer is considered a competitor.  i've been surprised at the people working second jobs.

Honestly, I don't think they should be allowed to say who you can and cannot work for unless you're salary. The moment I walk out the door i'm on my own time.

In Kroger's mind, you're ALWAYS on THEIR time. You just only get paid whenever you're on the clock. They own you, basically.

I see what you guys are saying , Any ideas of places that have overnight shifts ? I would apply for afternoons but nobody told me that, when I told kroger I had open availability, I was basically signing my soul over -___- . I already applied for overnight for McDonald's , who should I try next ?

Assuming your store sells pretty much what mine does, I'd say you need to exclude delis, bakeries, butcher shops, pharmacies, gas stations, and groceries. Pretty much any other type of business is open for you to work at.

Back when I was PT and first got hired on at Kroger, I went to WM to get a PT job to help make ends meet. WalMart told me they weren't sure if they could hire me or not because I could be working there at WM, and if a customer asks for help I could tell them "Well, we have this, but you can get it cheaper at Kroger." I totally understand this mindset, as I was formerly a store manager and I wouldn't be thrilled with an employee working for a competitor.

I didn't pursue WM any further because I was getting 40 hrs at Kroger, and then moved positions and became FT.

its sad but yes it will get you fired. in todays economy some homes need 2 incomes but ironically  kroger consider everybody competition. walmart, a furniture store, a liquor store, a jewelry store and anybody that sales 1 of a single item they have a shelf is considered competition. oh but they dont do lube jobs. look there just not at walmart.

hmm thats interesting.  i see it sorta the opposite way.  so you work for Kroger then you decide to get a PT job at Meijer or Target or Wally's.  You have access to Kroger's pricing and Store Operating Proceedures.  These things can easily be compromised if you then go to "the dark side" and want to be dishonest.  For example, I remember way back when (and I am sure that they still do this) that we use to go to the competitors and do price shops.  I would walk the produce department and write down the prices on most all of the items.  You try to be discrete but yea right.  We had computer printouts or even early release fliers that the competitors would love to get their hands on.  The fliers came to the store 3 to 5 days prior to start date.  Us managers would then go up to the conference rooms and do some silly strategic planning before ad break.  If I really was a immoral horrible person, I could take one of the fliers over to the competetor and sell it for $100.  Crap like this and other things (use your imagination) happen all the time. So NO WAY SHOULD YOU BE ABLE TO WORK FOR THE COMPETITOR.

I could care less if you do or dont. I'm just giving my best explanation as to why is is not allowed.

Yeah, but this assumes that the worker cares about either company's success... which is hardly ever the case.

oh i wholeheartedly disagree.  i would say more than 1/2 of the employees care; 25% dont care and the rest are just too stupid to care.

Technically, Kroger isn't the be all to end all in your quest for a second job. If you take a look at your union contract, you'll probably find out that the union has a bigger problem with this second job than kroger does. They don't want you to work in a non-union shop. Really, if you read most contracts they'll tell you your union will allow you to be fired for entering a competing business. The fact that you picked up the application is grounds for termination. (Disclaimer: not all stores have the same contract so don't start yelling because yours doesn't say that.)
