Kroger card first, scan fast, close till fast, wait for a full belt, one check clear when waiting on customer, prompt early for payment, know where the barcodes are and the produce codes.. Talk less to the bagger don't bag during an order. Clean and clear your register and belt
Here are some things I've learned that have worked wonders for me:
1. Always press EFT after pressing the TOTAL button. You can always press CLEAR twice to take you back to the total screen. This will pretty much stop your clock. This also works well when they want cigarettes after you've scanned everything.
2. Learn the codes for all the large items (cases of water, bags of firewood, gigantic Drug/GM items, etc.). This way instead of wasting time picking up the item and scanning it, you can type in the code and go.
3. Alternate flavors and items. This eliminates the hesitation when scanning two of the same item back to back. This works very well with Kool Aid packets and canned stuff (green, red, green, red, etc.).
These are just some of the tricks I've learned. My lowest Ring Tender was 101 (my first week), and I've had the top spot for all but 3 weeks in the 4 months I've worked at Kroger. Good luck!

i dont worry about my ring time anymore. hours cut, no baggers, what do they expect me to do? plus there is a full time cashier who literally gets between 60 and 65 % every single week and they won't put her on uscan because she gets too many customer complaints. me getting a better ringtime does not help because having someone so slow brings down the entire front end's average so we never make 95% or better unless she's on vacation.
We just got email telling us to push use of the GS1 DataBars double barcodes on produce to improve cashier scores.
Turns out many are not in the system and some that are ring up the wrong prices! We've had $7 apples and $9 avacodos!
Let's add in all the produce that comes though the front end without stickers because they fall off like onions or citrus, customers who bag and tie their produce and shipping us produce bags that aren't sufficiently translucent and it just seems like throwing technology at a "problem" it won't be good at solving in the real world.
I use to be the Price Coordinator for a different company and I know that putting UPC codes in for produce is an almost impossible task. Just think of all the farms out there that supply apples, strawberries, celery or whatever and the add a new UPC here and there. You have to link all of them together which is just plain impossible then with produce getting a truck in every day with new items its just near impossible to stay on top if it. Hence the produce SKUs....

I pretty much assumed the same. We recieved notice a while back that ALL the barcodes on the produce should work. Only about 1/3-1/2 actually do. Looks like somebody in ops spoke too soon.
What I saw a checker do, is that when there was a ginormous over flowing cart order, after he scanned all the items, he signed off the register, helped the bagger finish bagging up the order, then signed back on. Is it "cheating?" Yes. But it helped our checker raise his elms score.
