Technically, it isn't that important, but if you work in a district that has you sign an alcohol policy monthly, it states on the paper that you will do so.
I just enter in a random date if the customer looks like they're 103 years old. If they look young, I'll ask them for their I.D.
One of our cashiers got written up for entering her birthday in every single time somebody bought alcohol or tobacco. Because the date you type in shows up in the system, just not on the screen.
I guess it depends on how strict your manager is. But I wouldn't risk getting written up over being lazy about asking for I.D.

a girl did that at my store. it seemed to work til she got stung and arrested because the person was dressed to look 25 but was only 16.
