Hi. I worked for Kroger before about 3 years ago and made 12.35 an hour. I just got rehired at a different store and the hiring is done a.. little different now. I'm wondering if this is normal. Basically they are paying me minimum wage for the first few weeks to "verify my experience." Normally I would be inclined to believe this because I never had any issues with my pay at Kroger in the past, but my girlfriend was hired under the similar circumstances and after 4 months has not gotten her "experience verified". So is still making 7.25 when she was told she would be making no less than 9 after verified. I was also told I would be making a little more than what I was before (the 12.35) on the phone and during the interview, but that he couldn't quote an exact amount, and he said HR would tell me that number in orientation. In orientation HR told me that her rough estimate is that I would be getting paid 10.10 once my employment was verified and minimum wage for the first few weeks until then. So basically, does anyone else think this sounds suspicious? Any ideas on what I should do? Yesterday was my orientation and I'm starting today but I'm thinking about calling and telling them I don't want the position. I haven't even had a chance to join the union yet.
If possible get everything in writing. Kroger has done this or something very similiar many times that I can remember at my store. HR just tells you whatever they think and then someone else decides that they don't want to give you that amount. I would say call the union if possible, but I would try to clarify with the HR person what you will be getting paid and that you will not accept the position if you were hired under false pretense. Ask if you can please have it in writing, and if they say they can not then ask why not. Good luck.
There is an "experience pay request worksheet" that is to be completed by management. Talk to your store manager and ask him/her to submit it... Also, you must sign this form, so you know wether he/she did or not. Each week ask your store manager if it was sent in. If he hasn't in the next 2 pay periods, talk to your union rep.
