I work in the meat department as a cutter and for the last three years management has been pushing me to go into management. They keep giving my name to corporate because apparently there are not enough meat managers to go around in the Kroger universe. I am very hesitant to go into management even though I have experience simply because upper management does not like anyone who "makes waves". They prefer someone who doesn't make a lot of "noise", keeps the status quo and gets things done without complaining or making the company sound bad. I would not be able to do that given the conditions that our department has to work with. So if you speak up and request changes be made, next thing you know you are either managing at another store or you are fired. Any advice ?
Take the experience..then you can make some real money somewhere else if you want later.
SO MUCH THIS! I spent 8 years as a manager in the hellhole known as Kroger, took my experience somewhere else. I'm appreciated and challenged, and all feedback is direct and honest. Things look good to have my own store within a year, after 1.5 years there.

Where do you work at?
I'm not going to take a chance at messing with what I have by naming where I work. I'd rather not have any comments I make here tied to me in any way. Let's just say it's still retail, but in a different product line.

If more good people will go into management and don't let that position change them our work environment will change forever
You have to change somewhat to be in management otherwise you will have people walk all over you. But you don't have to turn into a complete jackhole either. The hard part is finding a balance and a way to do what is best for both the business and employees.
