Getting full time
Permalink

Hi I have been working for krogers for two years now and I want and need full time because I am in college and need the money. My csm says he can only give be 30 hours because I am too close to full time. Is their a way to find out how close I am. Some times my manager calls me in even though my CSM says I am too close. How can I play my CSM to get full time

Unfortunately, you cant. Kroger, like many other employers, has become absolutely terrible in treating its employees the right way. They want to avoid any costs associated with actually providing decent benefits, so keeping you under the 30 hours a week limit for "full time", which would then require kroger to offer you an employer sponsored health insurance plan, is job #1.

Your CSM and store leadership gets notes about who is approaching the hours limits, and orders to keep you from getting over those limits. You cant "play" the CSM to get you full time. Your labor contract (if a union store) will have particular provisions on what amount of hours over what length of time does qualify you for full time status. It seems some people's contracts are terrible and just say a full time job will be posted somewhere when it happens, rather than it being you "promoted" to full time.

That said, your option, if you want a FT status job (and you will work 40 hours with no restrictions, only way thats going to happen), is to check the jobs postings for your area and see if any spots that are already FT positions are open, and start applying! Especially get away from the front end type positions, as they tend to really be part timers with very few FT jobs.

Depending on your Union Contact your store has to maintain a specefic full time ratio. If they have enough or more than enough full timers to meet that ratio, then you'll have to wait until someone quits, retires, gets fired, transfers, etc. before you can apply for FT. And even then it'll be based on senority. I had to wait 4 years before getting FT status and that only happend because we had a BUNCH of old timers leave for various reasons over the course of 1 year. I got lucky. You may be waiting a long time for FT.

Ask other employees who don't care if they have hours or not (usually the younger employees who might still be in school) if you could have their hours. Trade smaller shifts for longer shifts. Opt for shifts you would not normally do. I obtained full time status my first 4 months working in front end as a cashier. I would come in EVERY time someone called off, even baggers. Show that you deserve full time and maybe you will get it.

They are only allowed a certain number of FT employees. They will reduce your hours and refuse to let you cover a shift to avoid it. Getting full time is easier in departments other than front end. In our collective bargaining agreement you cant get FT over someone else who's been there longer if they want it Managment told me not to tell people when I got mine. The whole seniority thing is BS,but so far every person who's tried to come and take my position has been put back on the front end because they just cant do the work. Even though they all try to use the ive been here for 10 years and have seniority.

But people who just started worked 40 plus hours as part timers and got full time before me. They are in gm and that's a large department in our store.

Because their dept probably was allotted another full time position based upon an increase in sales. Happened to me. A person in my dept quit. They were full time. The full time position went to our nutrition clerk who was less senior than me because her dept had been achieving the necessary sales for a 40hr position.

why do you want full time when you're planning on leaving after college? If i was your manager you would be at the bottom of my list nono offense but I would rather give the position to someone who was planning on staying. But yeah you have to have senority hmm unfortunately. Dont ask for it either its a bad career move from experience. Just wait.
