Nope, just tell them you're going to a funeral. They may ask you to bring back proof that you actually went. Just bring back a memorial card or something from the funeral home.

Correct. You are allowed up to 3 days of paid leave according to the local 1995 contract.
It depends on your local. I get 1 paid funeral day for cousins.
In the Mid South division we get 3 paid days for immediate family and 1 paid day for in-laws or grandparents. Anyone else you don't get a paid day off.

That must have changed in the new contract because the copy I have states 3 days for "parent, brother, sister, spouse, child, mother in law, father in law, grandparents, grandchildren, or any other relative residing with the employee" and nothing about a 1 day leave.

I was going by memory. I checked the contract book (the old one, The new ones haven't come in yet) and it says you get three paid days off for parents, children, spouse, siblings, grandparents, grandchildren, son or daughter-in-law, mother or father-in-law, or any relative residing in the same household. You get one day of for a brother or sister-in-law.
Back when my grandparents died in 1990 and 1998 I only got one paid day off.

Hmm, that's strange because I read that quote word-for-word directly out of the contract before I posted it. I'm in midsouth too. The details may vary district-by-district, I guess.
