Has anyone ever been sent home early?

Tonight the managers went around and asked if anyone could go home early, I told them I couldn't be done by 8 but I could get out of there by 8:30. I left at like 8:20 leaving one person to close up for the night. I was told sales were down and they needed to cut back on hours.

Is this a common thing? Our store's in a remodel so that would explain why sales are down. But this is the first time I've ever been asked to leave early.

Years ago one of my managers was asking for someone to leave early. I don't remember the reason, but I volunteered.  But by no means is it something common.

It's not common, especially in departments outside of the front end.  I've worked in the bakery department for over 20 years and there's always something you can be doing.  If you've got all your regular work done, you can always stop and clean something.  Donut cases are especially bad about collecting crumbs and bits of icing.  Another thing you can do is make sure the bread tables are filled.  As a baker, nothing pisses me of more than to come in and see empty shelves and then see the bread I baked the day before sitting on channel carts all because someone was too lazy to put it out.  If you see something that needs to go out on the shelf, put it out.

As far as me leaving early goes,  the only time I leave early is on Christmas Eve.

I work front end and leaving early can be a common occurence, especially when it's slow. There have been times when we've had way too many baggers and just not enough work to do so they start asking people who got in first if they want to leave early and then they go down the list from there.

Maybe that's how it is in bigger stores but here all the bread baked that day is put out in the morning, however I agree there's always SOMETHING we can do, we clean the donut case every night, wipe the counters, etc... but this was the first time I've been asked to leave. I told them I couldn't leave at 8 because I had to finish cookies but right after that I was asked to leave, leaving one of our new people (she's been there about 3 weeks) to finish cleaning the donut case and to take out the trash and things like that by 9. I just thought it was weird that all of a sudden the managers were told to cut hours?

It's not totally uncommon. One of the following is up at your store :

1) Remodel is naturally knocking your sales down a bit, and they have reduced the amount of hours available based on that. Maybe your management didnt realize it yet and has a schedule with too many hours compared to that. I remember at FredMeyer the "OK" zone was within 100 hours of the alloted hours, for the whole store. So they may be getting close to that 100 hour (or similar) level where they'd be getting a call from the district president.

2) Also possible that someone is up for a review or bonus and just wants to play it safe so they get their $$$$$. Store director/managers only nobody in your department.

3) With reduced hours for the remodel, the overall # gets reduced. They may have cut another department WAY too short on their schedule, maybe produce is not able to do enough with so many people etc. So they will take hours from other departments that could "get by" with a shift or two less, even if not optimal, so that produce or wherever can be OK.

I'd check your schedules next week real carefully, just to make sure seniority/availability/etc. is being respected. When they get in hour-cutting mode things can get all out of wack.

You never have a to leave early unless you want to. They can ask you to do it but you are never forced to do it. If you're the closing shift on the front end never leave early unless everyone else is going with you.

It's very dangerous to leave only one person on the front end at night.

 HA! HA! I bet it had nothing to do with sales. They just had a big meeting in Kentucky. I know everyone here knows about it. I was told all divisions and someone if not a manager from all 2,500 stores were their. They had to pay for motels charter planes and possibly food.
