I'm a college student working on a double degree in mechanical engineering and food sciences. I've been at it for about four weeks now, and I am getting 40 hours, overtime, and a second job as a short order cook nights, which all together makes up to around 64 hours. As most of you have written the job I have isn't the greatest, but I find it intoxicating, and have been working in similar places in the past for many years.
I want more though. I'm hungry for it. I have my safe serve, and I have almost completed my associates in science and liberal arts. How do I advance within this company, I'm already moving up on seniority as multiple people quit since I joined, and I want to learn more skills in both the deli and meat and seafood eventually before I transfer to Costco or work for another independent company.
Is there any tips or advice for me? I've worked at Krogers in the past as a courtesy clerk and hated it, but this is way different. I actually love this job, more so then I did with Meijers and Barnes and Nobles.
Interesting curiculum you've got there. Mechanical engineering and Food Science........Associate's in Science and Liberal Arts........Guess I'm not seeing how one school of discipline relates to the other.
I wasn't always a engineering major or a food science major. I figured I'd both degrees and then use the food processing, agriculture, and manufacturing tools to do both, as well as having a more open choice in things to do then simply choosing PR or something in academia (History, philosophy) which at one point I was considering.
Not to mention the long term employment opportunities with agriculture technology, processing technology, and countless other things.
Thanks for explaining. For a hot second I thought you were maybe fulla sht. .....But now it makes more sense.
In re to your original question tho, I gotta ask: What exactly are your career aspirations? No offense meant at all, but it seems like you're not real sure. If you're asking about advancement opportunities within Kroger, I assume you're referring to salaried management? If so, your Associate's alone will guaranteed at least crack open the door. They prefer a Bacheloriate, but when they see you're well on your way to that, it's really just a matter of convincing them to put you on their fast track.
I'd like to try to into get into some level of department management of the deli.
Eventually I'd like to get involved in working at plant while at university (Around 2016). Is it possible to transfer from being a assistant department manager to working within plant at an above entry level job (Assuming one has some sort of experience working in one)?
