Ridiculously long waits at customer service
Permalink

They're doing their best to shorten the checkout lines, which is great.  But waiting in line for customer service is always a huge pain.  I dread when I need something from there because it's an ordeal. They generally only have one person at the counter (even if there's two people, one is usually sitting in that locked off area, not helping customers) and if one customer wants help with something complicated, it could take 15 minutes or more to get it done.  If you're waiting in a long line you could be there for a long time.

It's even worse for me, because I'm an employee and the people at the counter know me, they try to wait on another customer if I have to fill something out. So I had to wait AGAIN for them to finish with that customer who was behind me before they could finish my transation.  Now I tell them "please wait, I'm almost done filling this out and I'm in a hurry."  They really need more employees working back there.

I work at Guest Care some of the time, and the Western Union transactions take the most time.  And I've had some people that have 3 or 4 WU's in a row, which makes the line grow even longer.  Money orders, check cashing, etc. aren't so bad.  But there should be a person behind the desk for Western Union transactions only, and another person for all other things.  But I know that will never happen with Kroger's quest to cut hours.

I hate those stupid Western Union things.  I'll punch out for break and decide to pick up my paycheck at the office.  If there's somebody there doing a Western union transaction I may as well forget trying to get my check before my break is up.  It's even worse when they don't speak English, which is usually more often than not.  I guess it's all the illegals sending money back home.

 Ahh, nothing like unprovoked racism.

 Hey, it's the truth though.

The system they have in place at my store is if the line at Customer Care grows too long, either a supervisor or a co-manager will go back there and help out until the line goes down. It works, to an extent, but when you pull sometimes your only front end supervisor off the floor to help out at Customer Care, you lose control over the floor unless you have a co-manager take the place of the supervisor. Odds are, if you have a long line at Customer Care, the store is going to be busy too, which means while the supervisor is behind the Customer Care desk, you could be getting dips along your registers and checkers that need assistance are left helpless unless the person at self-scan can get away to help him or her or a co-manager can get there.

It would make practical sense to always schedule two people to work at Customer Care and that would be an example of putting the customer first, but the whole "Customer 1st" claim on the part of Kroger is nothing but a lie, as we all clearly can see. Even if it's slow, you could always use that second person at Customer Care as a checker, bagger, to do go-backs, help out at self-scan and so on. There's plenty of work that could be done and that person could easily stay busy for their entire shift, but Kroger does not want to spend the money, and not wanting to spend the money is the reason why Kroger will never have the market share it's currently targeting.

During the busy times, the lines are ridiculous, and during off hours, it's a ghost town.

The lines were getting so bad they were interfering with the flow of traffic through the store.  We ended up putting in some of those retractable belt barriers to try to manage it a little better.

We did that too but our FEM turned the signs around because she has no idea how bank lines work. so now it's the same as always except there is a large beltline in the middle of the floor to annoy people.

also it's in the way of our "fat people cart"'s charging station.
