You get a paycheck. That is the appreciation for your work. Some managers just suck and shouldn't be in management. With that being said... being in management just SUCKS BAWLS sometimes. Being middle-management? Sucks big huge balls almost all the time.
For ALL of the people who constantly complain about their managers, please...just try it sometime. Then you REALLY know what it's like to be unappreciated. I'm not talking about your dept heads either, I'm talking about co-managers and store managers.

Yep, do you think it's going to be different anywhere else? lol
It is actually! Kroger is literally the worst company when it comes to how the corporate structure views its average employee. At FredMeyer, being somewhat far away from Cincinnati, you had a better shot at decent upper management. If they weren't total jerks, then your work experience was actually quite nice. Plenty of kudos and recognition when due. Some management were definitely NOT into that, of course, so it could get negative, but 75% of the store management people I ever worked with over 6 years were perfectly fine.
I had worked for Whole Foods Market the last 3/4's of 2012, and they were totally fine. Management really appreciated you, praised your department for beating targets/goals/etc. , and the pay and benefits structure showed it as well. I quit to try and do school full time, but then decided that would put me too far behind financially, and also decided to move back to Georgia and be closer to family.
I just got hired on at Publix. I haven't worked yet since I have to wait for drug test results, orientation etc. but the company is definitely NOT structured like Kroger. Christmas bonuses, quarterly store performance bonuses, stock options, somewhat matching 401k, and a positive atmosphere focused on customer service (and actually giving you the hours to do so!) and employee enagement. Use Kroger as a stepping stool ; get yourself a few years of experience and then get the hell out!
There's really no excuse for abusive managers. I recently made a comment re employees are not considered assets. ----Not MY belief; just how the corporate world sees it.
Personally, I've found that the best results I get in terms of achieving my goals is to give positive energy to the people working with me. Not working FOR me: We're a team, and everybody on a team has to feel they are valuable..........and yes, appreciated.
I've worked with some managers who lead by fear and intimidation. They never seem to get it that that only works for a short while, before open rebellion takes over and their lives become a raging sea. I've sat in on meeting where this doctrine was actually preached like some form of evil Gospel.......I'll grin and nod and follow along, but will otherwise have nothing to do with that kind of anti-morale boosting.
I would say that for the good co-managers, it definitely sucks bawls :P
I mean, they work 10 hour days at least 5 days a week. They get chewed out just as much by the Cincinnati bigwigs. They don't even make that much money either from what i've heard. Not for the amount of time they put in to the store at least.

We have 1 good co-manager, 1 decent one, and a worthless one that no one respects. Dude just shuffles around the store with his bascart and cleaning bucket. Thought we had people for that...but what do I know?! Our store manager ducks out 4-5 hours early a couple times a week, and that REALLY screws over the 2 decent co-managers. I had thought about going through the MD-1 program, but I've since changed my mind. There's simply not enough money to be used and abused like that.
