I am wanting Memorial Day off because I was invited to go somewhere with friends. Last time I asked for the day as a personal day they penciled me in to work. This year I am thinking of saying I have a Dental appt to get some work done so I can get the day off. They don't need to know what kind of work. If I use this excuse what are the chances of it actually working? If they do find out I can always say I got the wrong day.

I don't know too many dental offices that are open on memorial day. I think trying to pull this will just alert your supervisor that you are a liar and a schemer.
If you are part time..just tell them u have a family reunion...if its that big of deal and u want it, just call in sick...dont miss out on important things for a 7 dollar a hour retail job..leave that for the kroger lifers.
Do it the right way. What department are you in? Put in a request for the day off and talk to your department head. If you get the day off, great. If you don't, then show up for work. It's a job and you have a responsibility to be there. If you aren't happy with the way you're scheduled, then go get another job that doesn't interfere as much with your life outside of work.
I don't care if it's a minimum wage, thankless job or not. It's still a job and like any other job, you're not going to always get the days off you ask for. Kroger stores are already under-staffed as it is and when people blow off work because they have something more "fun" to do only puts additional strain on those that are scheduled to work the same time. Lying to store management/department heads is only going to set you up for trouble, cut hours and possible termination down the road.
Maybe it's not the same in every store but my department head is really great about everyone getting their requested days off.
There's been a couple times when we've been understaffed and we've requested a day off and she'll get someone from the deli to cover for us. There's hardly ever any time when there's an issue with getting a day off.
So my advice would be to simply talk to your department head first.
You're full time right? I'm not sure what contract you are under but if you prefer to only work 4 days during a holiday week then it is my understanding that they have to honor that. so put it in writing that you only wish to work 4 days and the holiday pay will be the 5th. usually then they give you the holiday off. make sure you photocopy it and give copies to your dept head, union steward, your self and maybe a co manager. wait a couple days then remind them about it and tell them you want Monday off as one of the three days.
