I saw in ad in today's paper where Kroger was saying their prices were lower than Walmart's. The ad said, "Here's the proof." They showed four items: Four items out of the thousands of items that are available at a typical grocery store.
I know what's you're talking about. Around here, Walmart and Kroger take it a bit further - from time to time, a Walmart Super Center that's about three miles from the Kroger I work at will put out two shopping carts near the main entrance. Each cart will have the identical products, and one will have a Kroger receipt and the other a Walmart receipt. The Kroger I'm at will do something similar sometimes, just without the carts though and instead post the receipts side by side on a sign.
I think we all know that, in most cases, Walmart beats Kroger in prices. Only on a very few products can Kroger honesty claim a lower price. Now when Kroger does a Mega Event sale, prices are usually better than what Walmart offers, from what I can tell. Overall though, Walmart has Kroger beat and both companies and a lot of customers see that.

Krogers in my division do this every single period, comparing us to our major price competition, publix. The company comparison shops and sends us a sign and a list, by upc, of all the items in the cart.

Actually, this is not true. The gap between walmart's prices and kroger's white tag (regular price) is only around 7%. If you take into account even kroger's basic sales, we beat walmart on many, many items. Our average prices are so close that we have essentially "taken price off the table".

That's two full bascarts though. What made the ad funny is the fact they only listed four items that had prices lower than those at Walmart. Now I'm sure there's probably more but if you're going to say your prices are lower than a leading competitor's you need to give more than just four examples to prove your point.

I don't see that. My household's shopping bill at Walmart is around $50.00 - $75.00 a week at Walmart. If I were to instead spend that money at Kroger, it would always end up being more. From food to health items to produce, Walmart is almost always cheaper and that's why if I need to go shopping, it's Walmart that I and other employees go to because we save money as opposed to shopping at Kroger. I've compared prices and when you're saving a nickel or a dime or sometimes more on most items, it adds up.
Kroger is definitely ramping up their game. Believe me when I tell you, Walmart is growing very concerned about this! We in management are hearing the name Kroger dropped in meetings and e mails and conference calls with alarming regularity........Tho, secretly, I think it's great. Healthy competition is always better for an economy; keeps everyone on their toes.
That said: All the above responses are correct. It really depends on what your shopping needs are, the hours you go, and the distance you need to get there. For the past two years I've been doing almost ALL my bulk shopping at Kroger. I shop late night, and the first benefit they have over Wally is AVAILABILITY. As in, I can actually get my sht without having whole grocery sections blocked off by two yahoos leaning on mops.----Plus, Kroger's shelves are stocked (at least at my store)....Walmart has gotten deplorable at that.
Also, Walmarts tend to be out in the suburbs, an ave of 15 minutes each way from where I live. My neighborhood Kroger is FIVE minutes away.
We have a dairy plant here in Fort Worth that Kroger owns. Walmart would have a fit when we would go $10/10 on Kroger Half Gallon Milk, because they would match the price and lose alot of money.

I think it really depends on where you live and how much the Managers but an effort to compete. In have seen where the Kroger manager will send someone out checking like Milk prices. If another store has lower price on milk he will usually lower the price.
With our newer prices we beat a lot of WM's prices. I also buy a lot of the store brand stuff at Kroger, plus the selection is a sh!t ton better than WM's. I hardly ever go into WM anymore, I definitely don't get groceries there either. I always get out of Kroger cheaper than I do WM.
Just one more lie from kroger. Walmart has a policy that will match any price. They dont have to beat kroger they will always match them pluss they still double coupons.

Price matching annoys me anyway, and it will just lead to higher prices eventually. Why would Kroger want to run sale items when Walmart shoppers would just price match it and lead to them having more sales?
If you want a sale item is it really that hard to drive to the right store? Usually they're close to each other anyway.
Another thing...Even if Walmart's prices ARE lower, they are generally still screwed up in many other ways, so it balances out...But, you won't hear about that from Walmart...
