Krogers employee graduating

We have a Kroger's employee graduating High School today. He requested the day but they fit him into the schedule regardless. He told them he wasn't going to miss his graduation and would NOT be in. They put him down to work anyway. Now he told me he was simply not going to show. He was going to his ceremony. I like this kid and he's a great worker. But will he get written up for not showing up to work? It's his graduation after all... I'd hate to see him get into trouble for deciding to take the day off anyway.

Additional info: he had to go to school for his rehearsal and has work from 3:30pm-8:00pm. And ceremonies sometimes go long. Plus the ceremony starts at 5:30 and after all the talking and whatnot you get out of there at around 7 or so. IF the speeches aren't super long and they get started on the dot.

He should just tell the manager he won't be in that day, and explain why. If the manager still refuses, then he should just go to his graduation anyway. But he should talk to the manager first imo.

Ah, I just see that you mentioned it was today.  Did he try to explain his situation when he saw the schedule?

He should still call in and tell them I requested those days off and you didn't give them to me. This is a mandatory event.

Yes, he did tell the management way ahead if time. He's very reliable and ALWAYS comes in when he can. He did end up going to his event btw,and just in case they decide to write him up he's going to bring his program with all the graduates' named on it and the time said graduation was approximately going to end. Plus his graduation diploma as back up. He also is going to refuse to sign any write up. Although with all that info I doubt they will write him up.

He should also forward a copy of it to the union, HR, and store management in formal writing to cover himself.

I'm going to suggest that to him. That is a good idea. It will provide extra coverage in case they decide to do something against him.

I've had a few times where I req. a day off or had it set unavailable, made important plans for the day, only to find out I got scheduled anyway. Both times I told my manager "Look, this is a school function. I'm usually off that day / req it off. So you can either find someone to replace me now or you can deal with being a person short because I'm NOT coming in." Lo and behold the schedule got changed both times. :)

If its something like a graduation they should find the time to schedule around the person. I'm sure the department head could of found a way to have them off on those days, but did it regardless for whatever reason. If they end up writing him regardless of him sending those letters have him write a statement on the back of the write up and don't sign it. I would also call the union as well to get involved if that happens.. Its clearly you're trying everything that you can do on your end, but the company is obviously trying to play ball with you. I consider the union like car insurance, you don't need it right away, but when you do its there.

Your management and scheduler are horrible and they should feel bad.
