I've been working for Kroger for two and half years as a courtesy clerk. Currently I would like to pursue a different line of work, however when I asked my supervisor about this she said that basically potential employers just go through Kroger corporate and that she would not personally vouch for me. I have been a reliable employee during my time at Kroger, thus I feel strongly that my department head should be willing to give me a reference. Does anybody know whether this BS is standard procedure for large corporations like Kroger?
She might think that a "lowly courtesy clerk" is not " worthy" of a reference. (Depending if she likes you or not) I'm not saying your position is lowly. In fact courtesies are the backbone of the store IMO. I'm a Utility Clerk and do mainly cleaning. Occasionally I'll do courtesy work. One if our old managers thought courtesy clerks and utility clerks were fodder to be treated however. But when they had a jam this manager who thought so lowly of our position was the first to call me.
If your dept. head won't give you a reference can you ask other co-workers to vouch for you? Or does it have to be management/dept head? Maybe ask another dept head to vouch for you. Good luck
just remember one thing. some of these dept managers and co managers are either young or just too stupid to have any idea what a professional reference is and how to write one. find the person you think is smart enough and/or willing enough to do it. avoid all others.
