Vacation days
Permalink

I put in for a vacation three months ago. Another girl who has been there a couple months longer than I have put in for the same week two days ago. the vacation is in two weeks at this point. my manager said there's no way we can both have the time off. Shouldn't I get the time off since I've had it in for months or does is go by seniority?

Usually it goes by seniority. (At least in my store it does) but just to be sure look it up in your handbook, or check with your manager or shop steward.

The other person obviously doesn't respect you, but it goes by seniority.

Under our contract, we have to have our vacation requests in by March 15th of that year.  Management then has until April 1st to let you know if there are any conflicts.  If they don't, then they have to let you take your vacation when you requested it.  In this case, if someone with more seniority suddenly decides they want to take their vacation that same week, they either have to let you both go or give it to the person who got their request in on time.  Seniority does not apply in this case.

I had to have my vacation requests in clear back in February. It does go by seniority but we filled it out in order so that we knew who was already taking off when, fixes all conflict issues that way.

Yes, its like this in my contract. If you don't have something similar in that setting let store management know you have more seniority over the person. I would also tell them you've bought tickets to a hotel or some type of entertainment outside of the city as well even though it may not be true. If they don't fulfil the request I would send a letter of the request formally to store management, the union, and human resources.

But only if you get your request in by the cutoff date.  You can have the highest seniority in the department but if you don't get your vacation requests in by the cutoff date you have to take what's left.

Yeah you're right. That's why I had to have mine in, in February. We all did, I was at the bottom of the list in senority but still got to choose (from what was left) my vacation. This coworker shouldn't be able to pull this sh!t now.

I work in the fuel center, so we are kept so separate from the store. The only way we have of requesting days off (and can request them at any time) is to put write them down on a calendar in the back of the fuel kiosk. It is completely unprofessional how requests off are handled.
