Part Time Avaliability
Permalink

I have been a part time employee at Kroger for 7 years and have worked in Frozen Food for the last 2-3 years and continue to work in Frozen currently.  I am going to college in the evenings and have been doing so for the last year. I have my schedule set to where I am available 5am-9 Sunday mornings and 5am- anytime Monday - Thursday having 36 hours of time avaliable per week and unavailable Friday and  Saturday.

I am very active in church which is why I do not work any longer on Sunday mornings and I have other side jobs and lots of other things that I do on Friday and  Saturday, including group work for grad school projects, etc.

My concern is that it has been this way for at least a year with no problems, now our store has a new manager as well as new co managers and lots of toes are starting to be stepped on. When I started at Kroger long ago, my incentive for working at Kroger was that it was a job that provided me good flexibility while I am in school and this is why I continue to stay part time.  With the new management, requests are not taken seriously and availability is something that they just simply do not seem to care about. EXAMPLE this week,  (as happens every week) the schedule was not posted until Saturday and when I saw it Saturday evening all the sudden I am scheduled at 3am everyday, including Sunday (today). No one asked me if I could do it the new manager just decided that's how it would be.

It is my understanding that as a part time worker , this should not be happening. I have always heard and seen that part time employees are supposed to be able to set their own schedules and especially someone like myself who has been there so long and who's schedule has basically been the same for a year.

Another example, my family and I are going to Florida next week for vacation, management has known about this for at least 2 months and I put it in the Eschedule system roughly 6 weeks ago, now new manager is trying to tell me I can not go all the sudden, costing my parents a lot of money considering they got a bigger condo since I would be going.

I just feel like this is not right, but I want to know If I am in the wrong on anything also. What are Kroger policies regarding issues like this and part time employees ? Because as far as they are concerned at our store nothing in your life is more important than working when they tell you to, which I might could understand IF i was full time but I am not. I am struggling with what to do because I really do not want to quit I just wish things could go back to how they used to be as far as the management and how they deal with things. Sorry for the excessively long tangent LOL

Do what you should do. Talk to managment and if it does not go well talk to the shop stewart. Prolly wont be a whole lot you can do. They will prolly just make you an offer you cant refuse. Get the hint? job or no job. Good luck! Have your proof and evidence you submitted all request and what not.

Aww, that sucks. I wish Kroger and other companies like that didn't think that they could go around doing the BS they do and screwing their employees :(

I would definitely try to show them that you asked this far in advance and why weren't you told earlier that they wouldn't let you off then so that none of your hopes/money would have been wasted on planning this trip.

Maybe this might help you (though the expense of actually doing it itself might be a inhibition, but it never hurts to explore your options - especially if you use them to show the management that you are aware of what is owed to you as you are following the correct procedures):
