I was talking to a checker the other day and he told me that ALL courtesies MUST do what a checker asks of them unless they are on management specific tasks. I thought only management/supervisors could tell courtesy clerks what to do? (I'm not a cc anymore) I have to help train a courtesy on how to work up front and I don't want to tell them To listen to checkers UNLESS its true.

Cashiers can ASK you to do things but always go over their head if you're already on a task and ask your supervisor to see if they want you to do it. I will not take orders from other people without passing it by my immediate supervisor or manager.
Even if i'm on the front end and a department head asks me to do something I'll go ask the manager if THEY want me to do it.
[edit:] Unless it's something like "Can you go clean up a spill in isle 5?". Use common sense.

I'm a checker, but I consider whoever is the front-end floor supervisor at the time to be "in charge". I ask courtesy clerks to do things like take back perishable items when they don't appear busy, or to get another cart for an extra large order, or to just bag if they are chatting with another worker and don't see that my belt is clogging up with items. I haven't had any courtesy clerks refuse my requests so far but if one of them did I would just ask someone else because I don't have any authority to "make" them do anything.
