You only have to work your scheduled shift unless agreed upon you.

Depends on your contract.

The manager should not give you that reason out loud.  It is a liability for Kroger regarding unemployment.  How bad to you want to stay employed?

Per our contract, if you are requested to stay one hour before the end of your shift, you have to stay.  If you leave without staying, it is a voluntary quit.  Our managers are cool so if you have to leave, they don't force you to stay unless it is an extreme company emergency.

Thats a crappy contract to be able to allow them to force you to stay against your will. I've stayed for 10 hours at a time to where I want to go home, but probably should stay 12 hours.

I was actually surprised to learn that, yes, your employer can legally demand you to work over as long as you are compensated. It's a Federal thing applying to all states; how union contracts affect it, length of time in the union, etc., I'm not sure.

A great link to look into is called Your Rights in the Work Place, which explains more of this in detail.

(by the way, I think it's bullsh!t too)~
