Kroger stores are divided into 3 categories: upscale, mainstream and value. Upscale stores are just what they sound like; they are normally located in high income neighborhoods and offer more high-end product. Mainstream is middle of the road, mostly located in middle class areas, offering a mix of upscale and value product. Value stores cater more to low income customers, so there will be more focus on low prices than anything else. In my area, value stores even get a different ad than upscale and mainstream stores that emphasizes low prices and bulk items. There is generally less variety in these stores because the clientele are more interested in price than options.

What most everyone has said is correct. I co-managed a value store for a while, and there were indeed different ads. Produce was more cabbage, greens, meat was more ground beef and such. Doesn't mean you can't make money. I kept a wing rack of King Cobra out 24/7 and sold the hell out of it. Limburger cheese in the summer for catfish bait, and Sunbeam Bread outsold Kroger 2-1. I also for the longest time had the 10/$10 tortilla chips as a permanent end, and could sell 1-2 skids a week. Money in the bank.

I'm assuming the majority of stores are the mainstream ones then? Because I've never even heard of a value store. I'm assuming the upscale ones are like the Marketplaces, where they have full sushi and sandwich bars and things like that.
