What are the benefits for working at Kroger as a new employee? Is the pay really good? Why should one work at Kroger at not some place else?

Couple of things.

you get 10% off any Kroger items, It adds up when getting full groceries.

I believe Kroger pays pretty well compared to its competitors, This all depends on your previous grocery work experience and which department you are working in.

You get granted raise every year. I stated out at $7.55hr in 06 I now make $14.85hr, although I am now a department manager.

Great job security, Kroger is not going anywhere. Its pretty hard to get fired from Kroger unless you are really stupid and do something like stealing. Even then there is a Union to back you up.

Me personally I hate the union, I never joined. as long as you do your job the best you can and are reliable, you don't need the union.

There are more positions opening up for advancement. Takes a little time but if you prove you want to move up and let them know, it will happen.

Health insurance is great. A lot of employees work here just for the insurance.

Full time benefits include, health, dental, vision. Very little cost. For me and my spouse I was paying a total of $15.28 a week. Very good health benefits.

Now that I am a manager I pay around $35.00 a week. Managers don't get the option to union employee insurance.

I have to admit overall I am happy to work with Kroger.

Kroger has made it possible for me to take a mortgage out on my own house and purchase two cars. I don't think no other comparable job could make that possible, and to think that I am only 27.

I think I am doing pretty well off for just working at a grocery store. Its all how you make out to be.

Don't get me wrong Kroger has a lot of BS that goes with it.

Programs that don't make sense, long hours, working holidays and weekends, very high expectations, little help.

They expect the most amount of work with the least amount of help or hours.

I am sure its just like that in any retail business. You just have to learn to put up with the bad if you want any good out of it.

Pay is terrible.  You will be getting minimum wage.  Raises depend on hours worked.  If you get enough hours, you may even be able to outpace minimum wage increases.

The insurance is good.  It's the only surviving legacy of the union.  I expect it to be on the chopping block any day now.  Full time benefits are irrelevant since you will not achieve full time status.

The possibility for advancement is not something you can depend on.

The only real reason you should work for Kroger is if you don't own a car and live within walking or bicycle distance.  Or if you are a young person who doesn't really need a real job right now.

Otherwise, you probably shouldn't bother.  It's a horrible dead end hopeless minimum wage part time only no skills retail McJob sort of thing.

The full time status is hard to achieve at our store also. they do not want people to get full time. They want part time people so they can work them 6 days. Our health insurance is cutting spousal support next year I think. They will start you at minimum wage unless you have experience then they add some too it. Most of the people they hire in leave shortly afterwards because they do not like the BS at my store. You will be told 5 ways to do the same job and none of them end up satisfying management. You may also receive little or no training in your department yet you are supposed to know how to properly do your job.

You hate the Union and yet you wish you had union benefits. So would you rather be in the Union? Or you happy being a first-line supervisor that gets abused any way possible? You make almost $15 an hour and pay 140 a month for health care! That's almost 10% of your net income. They must have mentioned your name at a division meeting and allowed you to drink the kool-aid  You my friend are EXACTLY what that damn company wants. So, if you're happy, I guarantee they are happy too.
