I went in to work today and on our scales, they had posted a message saying "never under...never under...never under..." As in, never go under what the customer wants even by a little bit. Seriously? And they're encouraging us to go "just a little bit over" what the customer wants. It happens sometimes, but I think it's kind of unethical to be promoting going over purposely.
I once had a customer ask for a half pound of turkey. so I sliced it up and tossed it on the scale and it weighed .48 I was just about to put it into the bag and tag it when the customer went ballistic that she wanted a half pound. so I went and grabbed a small scrape and tossed it on the scale.

I'd think you should ask if they want it to be over/under.
I mean, if someone's on a tight budget, they might not have enough to cover the cost if you go over too much...
That's what I usually do. But now apparently we're never allowed to go under. And if we happen to weigh it up and it's slightly under (.99 instead of 1) then we have to awkwardly add another slice while they watch. Though thankfully most of them say "that's enough" when they see it on the scale.
It's a really stupid new policy and one that's almost impossible to enforce.
I worked deli once. And if someone wants $5.00 worth of deli meat, you slice $5.00 or $4.99 worth deli. NOT $5.01 or $5.02, but the EXACT amount they asked for.
At my store we got a sign that says "always over, never under + one extra slice"
If I buy from the deli from now on and I see that I have more than I want, I'm going to tell them to take it off. Before I used to tell them to leave it on because I figured it was a genuine mistake but i'm not gonna let Kroger take advantage of me.
Speaking of unethical, our donuts come in frozen already pre-fried. All we do is heat them in the oven and put the glaze or icing on them. We're not suppose to tell the customers that we don't make them fresh. Tell you what, if someone asks, I'm going to tell them the truth. I'm not lying for Kroger.
Regarding the donuts, pies, bread, whatever, people ask all the time "do you bake these here" and i tell them, that they come in frozen but they are baked in the morning.
That way you're telling them that they are fresh, but still not lying. No one's told me not to tell them that.
It kind of honked me off, too = about the "never under" thing...ESPECIALLY those times that you can't get up to the .50 or 1.00 mark - keep walking back and forth from the slicer to the scale. Ugh! Usually I am pretty good and get it just a couple off points over on the first try. We are currently under going our new wave of key retailing and having the slicer and scale all right there will fix that problem of going back and forth. So far we are just using the new bags. Can't wait til they get us all sorted out with the new risers in the case and scale/slicer all together in one spot.
On and end note..I don't necessarily think that they want us to go WAY over ..I think just as long as we don't have .47 instead of the 1/2 pound...or the .98 vs. the whole pound. It all adds up.
I had a customer today want a family pack cube steak and wanted it to be $5.25. Well im not good but the family pack came out to be like $6.35. He threw a fit and we took a cube steak out. Im thinking its not really a family pack.

We have people that go home and count their pills. Funny how they never count their blood pressure or diabetes meds, it's always the pain and anxiety meds! Be grateful they don't do that, because those who make a habit of saying we shorted them we have to triple count them. Which sucks.
