Quit or possibly get fired?

Well, I had a vacation planned about 3 months ago to go out-of-state for a week, and I put in a time-off request around then; I never heard back from my department manager about whether it was denied/approved, so I assumed it was fine, seeing as how my other co-workers had done so several times in the past with much less notice than I had given~

So the schedule for this week comes off and I'm scheduled 2 days I requested; my department manager isn't available to discuss the matter with until tomorrow, but the co-manager told me that if I don't show up, my absences will be unexcused~

I've been working with Kroger for less than a year, I've never been written up, have only called out once due to a concussion, but all the management seems to have a bone to pick with me and I've had a non-written/verbal discussion before, so I doubt I'll ever get anywhere with the company, but what I'm most worried about is being fired. I don't want to be fired, as it will make it harder for me to find another job, but I can't put in 2 weeks notice now because I'm leaving out-of-state~

I'm worried how the 2 days (and possibly more depending on the scheduling until I arrive) will factor in to my termination or am I better off playing it safe and resigning before I leave?

You're much better off just biting the bullet on this one and postponing that vacation. Far better than losing your job over it.

I can't; I already made the flight and the hotel reservation (they're all non-refundable and were quite expensive) and I'm not letting my SO be by herself, so I'm kinda screwed there~

No offense, but you deserve to be fired.

Please explain? Is 3 months notice beforehand not enough for a non-paid time-off request? Should I have asked 6 months ago? Am I not entitled to the time-off? I am going to plead my case regardless to my department manager, but due to the issues they've had with me, I'm pretty sure they will not be very helpful.

I'm sorry, entitled is the wrong word; as management made clear to me, I'm not ENTITLED to anything, its just a REQUEST; but I still can't see any legitimate reason for me to be denied?

For whatever reason, you chose to wait until the last minute to discover your request had still not been approved. I don't understand how that could make you assume "it was fine".

Another problem: You say every manager there seems to have a bone to pick with you. That sounds more like YOU have the problem, and until you get some attitude re adjustment, you're going to keep finding these problems where ever you go.

The only thing I can recommend you do at this point is get with your store manager ASAP and get this straightened out.

No; this is retail. You should have reminded them the weeks coming up to it. You dug yourself a grave. Hopefully for your sake, someone can cover you and everything will be okay. I hope you learn from your mistakes and be a better person. Kroger owns your soul now. Never go against our lord ever again.

Is the time you requested off past your one-year anniversary date?  If it is and nobody else in your department has requested that week then have them count it as an official vacation.  They can't deny you your vacation time simply because they don't like you.  If you simply want the time off and it's not an official vacation you'll have to talk with your department manager.  If you do end up having to quit, don't worry about how it would look to another employer.  If another employer calls Kroger asking about you, the only thing they're allowed to say is how long you worked there.  They're not allowed to say why you left.

They can, however, deny the vacation based upon the fact that it was not scheduled in advance. Those are scheduled earlier in the year and even if OP didn't have 1 yr seniority at that time, they still are required to schedule their vacation time for some time after their anniversary date.

OP here, than you very much for all the responses (and a good giggle here and there)

I'm really quiet and reserved to be honest, and I have had been made to take the fall for many instances that were not my fault, and I stubbornly did my best to refute the claims that I was at fault, citing evidence (I made a 11-page document/spreadsheet/etc to prove I was not at fault) but they did not want to look at anything, and it seemed they didn't want a single thing to be on paper, because they were doing things improperly~

I don't really have an attitude at all about this, I agree that I really should have kept up with them, but you have to understand, people I work with have put in for days off literally the week before and had no issue, so I was hoping that having given so much notice beforehand, I was sure to get it.

I'm preparing to go in to talk to my department manager to pretty much grovel/kiss ass and beg for anything that can be done, while doing my best to fall into the firing trap of telling them that I'm not coming in. I really don't want to quit sameday, but if all I'm told is that if I don't show up, I can expect to be fired, and I can't collect unemployment since I've only been there 10 months, then I don't know what choice I have. It's a really crappy situation and I know its my fault for not double-checking that I would have got my request; if I had known, it would at least have given me a chance to give them 2 weeks notice...

Thanks again ^_^

there's you're problem right there.  at 10 months you haven't earned your vacation time.   your best bet is to find someone to cover those two days for you and get management to sign off.  otherwise you screwed yourself for some silly vacation. no

OP here with update; OKAY, so I met my department manager and it turned out she NEVER got my request; so she let me call in some people to take my shifts and said she'd schedule me off the days next week~

So yeah, I was worrying for nothing, although from now on, I'll make sure to double-check I get my requests next time~

Now you know for next time that you need to follow up on your request. Your vacation is a priority to you, it's not a priority to anyone else in that store. If you want to make sure you get your request fulfilled, then you need to make sure the proper people know about it. Also, follow up with it when it gets closer to the date. That is every employees responsibility. Not your managers.

It's a good learning experience. You'll be fine next time! :) Enjoy your vacation.

kind of amazed at the negative feedback, but it reminds me of the other cucks i work with. the managers will try to do everything they can to keep you there or trod on your rights because they're petty, foolish people

even if she put her request in sooner they'd revoke it just because they don't like her. if you at all act like an independent individual and assert your rights, the higher ups look for ways to get you fired. she asked about her request and the manager or supervisor didn't get back with her; why should you have to repeat yourself, why is a person in charge of others if they have a crappy memory?
