in local 1996 i know there's a pay classification for assistant grocery manager but do any other dept backups get a management premium ?

I'm in 1995 not 1996 but here they also include front end, deli, meat, drug/gm, and produce.

Yes, in 1996 contract all assistant department heads get a premium as do lead clerks.  Do you people ever read you contract?

Well, see that's an interesting question, at least for us 1995 people. See, the contract was ratified around last new years, but we have yet to receive copies. Many copies of the older contract were discarded soon after in anticipation of receiving new ones, so the only thing we have are the few-and-far-between copies of the old one that people happened to hold on to. This means that if an employee has a union-related question, they have to track down a steward and hope their memory of the particulars is correct, or they have to hope to god someone has a copy floating around. I don't even keep my copy at work for fear it'd be snatched.

1996 here... Backups get a .50 premium and leads get .40
