Well I've been with Kroger two years and I was finally getting 32 - 38 hours a week. Checked my schedule yesterday and I'm back at 20 hours a week. Thanks Kroger! I finally had some seniority but a girl transferred from another store, and 4 people have been transferred from other departments to the front end. I thought it would get better in a few weeks since the holidays are coming but I was told they have hired 3 more new cashiers! I now make around $450 less a month right in time for the holidays.
At least they got my seniority right - I have 1 or 2 more hours than the other employees hired after me LOL!!
Actually Ms. White you could call the union on this one. In most cases even if someone comes from another store their seniority resets until the end of the year.

There is a union to protect you from unfair practices like this. Call your union rep and explain the situation. If Kroger violated your contract try to get some of the pay they screwed you out of.
The girl that transferred from another store has LESS seniority and cant work from around 4 to 8 pm because of school. I worked 4 to 12. They gave her half of my hours - the 8 - 12 and I get the 4 to 8. They just split the hours between us because of her school schedule.
Here's another thing that's really making me mad - our comanager is letting a girl in Money Services claim some of our hours and SHE ISN'T UNION!!! I asked her - she told me the comanager said she could. I'm prepared to have a LONG talk with my union rep first thing tomorrow morning. Or the next day. Or the day after that. Whenever he gets around to returning my call.
Obamacare and insurance? I don't have Kroger insurance since I have Blue Cross Blue Shield from my husband's job.
Love the forum - I don't have to use my spell check since there are volunteers here for that!
If Money Services girl isn't union but has higher seniority isn't she still entitled to those hours if she wants them?
And besides how the heck do you find out if someone's union or not. Seems weird to me to have a list of who's not union available.
The Money Service girl has less seniority than me too. That's what I need to find out. If they aren't union then why do they get to claim hours? I asked the Money Service girl if she was union. She said she didnt know. I asked her did she fill out paperwork to join? Sign anything? She said no. I'm pretty sure seniority and claiming hours is a union benefit we get when joining. If non union employees get that same benefit then why do I have to pay dues and they don't? I didn't see anything mentioned in the Kroger employee handbook about seniority and claiming hours, only the union handbook has that information.
In right to work states even if an employee isn't union they're still in the union under an "umbrella" effect. They can still get representation from the union even though they're not paying members, but consider this. If a mechanic is running a shop and you're coming in to get your brakes changed for free do you think you'll be first in line? The paying union members would be served first and then you'll get your free brakes installed. Typically in a contract though if you transfer to another store you lose your seniority until the end of the year then it would reset to where they have more seniority.

Not in mine. I can transfer anywhere in the Atlanta or Midsouth divisions and have all my seniority immediately.

You're on "the list" and they aren't allowed to let you have any more than 24 hours a week until there's no further danger of having to make you full time. (They're scheduling you less than that so they have "wiggle room" in case you go over somewhere.)
I don't understand exactly how it works, but it's something like this: if you average 35 hours a week for more than a certain number of weeks, they are required to make you full time and give you at least 35 hours every week. (I'm not sure if that's employment law or union contract, but it covers even non-union employees as far as I can tell.) Not only that, but they have to also provide full time benefits for you instead of the crap benes they give part-timers. To prevent this, department managers are not supposed to schedule anyone more than 28 hours per week, but some managers will try to get around that by keeping your "official" schedule within the rules and asking you to "fill in" or stay over. (And some employees like me get around it for a while by helping out in other departments as often as they can get the extra hours.)
Because corporate is determined to keep us all part-time to save money, they watch hours like hawks, and anyone getting close to being able to go full time is put on a list that limits the hours they're allowed to 24 or less a week. They stay on the list until Kroger is no longer in danger of having to make them full time. (BTW, management HATES the union because it actually gives us a little protection from them.)
