Yesterday I clocked out at 6:08 and got overtime. When I went to clock out it said 6:06 so I decided to sort some go backs and wait another minute. Apparently management saw this on camera and now I might be getting in trouble for this. What should I do if management calls me back to talk to them? Could I be fired? I am a part time courtesy clerk that has been at Kroger for a year and a half with a near flawless record.
You'll probably just be asked to "give back" the time by clocking out early come your next shift. Unless the management at your store consists of unreasonable, icy-cold souls, you'll likely just be told, "just make sure you clock out on time". Simply apologize and promise not to let it happen again. Sorting go backs is not a reasonable excuse for allowing overtime to kick in whereas if you were with a customer, it would be reasonable in the eyes of many co-managers/store managers.
I don't recommend waiting until the last possible minute to clock out before you hit overtime. If six o'clock was eight hours for you, you should have clocked out at six o'clock. Don't clock in early and don't clock out after your shift is scheduled to end.
The only thing that seems like a big deal is that you're on camera looking at the time clock, going off to kill exactly 2 minutes, and rushing back to it. Which, I always thought the 7-minute interval rule was stupid, since if you work an extra 5 minutes, you worked for free, but....
So did they talk to you already? How do you know that they were watching you on camera (and that's lovely that they have such free time to do that).

Do not say anything if they bring you upstairs, Have your union rep with you. Now, if you do decide to speak have them show you where you were stealing time.
why would you do this? if you're already 6 minutes over and on the edge of OT, why would you even think to wait another minute?
Well, just nitpicking here, but it would take 2 additional minutes to roll into OT, not just 1.
no because they're already 6 minutes plus however many seconds over... what i hate it being told i have to stay that extra 5 minutes because it's "too busy." for real? are you paying me extra? no.
