Something I've always found strange at my store is that we have no manager between 11:00pm and 12:00pm, meaning the only employees in the store at that time are the closing self-checkout person, one night crew member, and 1 file maintenance person on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
Are other stores like this? It seems to me like that's kind of a bad setup. If a customer demands to see a manger, all you can say is "I'm sorry, we don't have one here currently."
The closing co-manager for the night typically leaves around 11:00PM, sometimes a little earlier, sometimes a little later, but he or she is only scheduled to 11:00PM at the store I'm at. If he or she gets out on time, then the store is still open for two hours without a co-manager. Our associate manager is sometimes there working with the overnight crew, though.
our closing manager flies out the door as soon as the first person from the grocery crew falls in the door, even if it's not the grocery manager or his backup. typically this is somewhere between 10 and 11pm.
when managers leave, one thing you have to watch out for is alcohol sales. the store is supposed to have someone in store at all times with a permit to sell or the store should not be selling alcohol.
Yeah, that's pretty typical. Our store opens at 6am, but the first manager doesn't show up until 7. At night, the closing manager is supposed to leave at 11 (although I've seen them run out the door as early as 10) even though we don't close for another 3 hours.
ours leaves at 10 and we close at 1. not really an issue because when it was 24 hrs there was no manager all night. i have had issues though when there was no cust service or night crew manager and i had a problem customer, but that was back when i first started so i didnt really know what to do. now that i do fes and have worked here forever, i'm more comfortable and don't mind lol
Most days, we have no management (only 2 total) after 6pm. Some days the co manager will stay until 8-9 pm, usually Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Most days whoever was on duty, will be gone by 5pm.
That's not unusual, actually. Depending on store volumes, there will be managment from either 7am-10pm, 8am-10pm, or 8am-9pm. Usually there is no managment in the store when there are not very many customers, so managment isn't necessarily needed during those off peak times. I leave a strong SCO attendant in the evenings and early mornings who is smart enough to resolve the easy stuff and take down information and pass along to managment the issues that need their attention.
The real question here is "How could anyone tell the difference?" As micromanaged as every clerk job is by all the "great" company technology what would be the deal if the manager never showed at all for a day or maybe 2-3 days? As long as the right people were there to open the doors and the safe in the morning I bet you'd be pleasantly surprised how the store runs itself and also bet the morale would be fine if not much better without some company puppet to come around every few hours and tell you to put on or take off a hat, bring in carts, sweep the floor, fill out some mindless paperwork, etc. and I can guarantee you the customers wouldn't know the difference except for not having to steer their bascart around a mgr. and some vendor hogging up an aisle while trying to bs for extra display space. If a customer does ask for a manager tell them they are gone to an almighty district mgmt. brainstorming session on how to increase their bonuses and no one is sure how long that will take.
