If Kroger wants to be succesfull its time to pay employees better. If you offer 20 hours a week at minimum wage, you're going to get people who don't care about their job, people who don't plan to stay with kroger, people who use kroger as an inbetween from no job to where they really want to be. If a person wants an employee to care about their job and do their work to their full potential, pay them what they are worth and respect them for what they do. Instead we get kids who dont care, still keep their job, and management has to work harder to pick up the pieces and most of them dont make enough for a living either. Anyone can say bagging groceries is easy, but then why are customers complaining that their produce is being bagged with their cleaning chemicals? Because the clerks working a 4 hour shift for 7.35 an hour do not care. Its not exactly an excuse, you work like you make minimum wage you always make minimum wage, but on that same note, if you value your employee for their hard work and dedication why have they been a meat clerk for three years? Shouldnt they be recognized? Promoted to market assistant or manager? Why is seafood a dead end position when the seafood leads are so dedicated and work as hard as the market manager? Why does the co manager with a masters degree in business get stuck as a co and not promoted to a store manager even though hes proven himself AND has a masters? Why do the sub dept managers make less than dept managers? They all write orders, they all take inventory, write employee schedules, train employees, work 40 hours + (because its not in the employee contract is the first problem, and the union is supposed to take care of you). And why would I want to manage a dept in the highest volume store for the same money I can make at a small store without the added stress? Where is the incentive to stay with Kroger? If everyone just gets stuck and overlooked no matter how dedicated they are what exactly makes me want to continue on with this company? And the union that is supposed to be there to help us, does nothing to improve the working conditions, all they do is help people who dont do their job keep their job! When an employee tells a customer he cant help them because he is busy theyll have to come back later, throws a giant three year old size tantrum when he has to fill a special order, smarts off to management regularly, why should that employee still be employed? Why should the other employees in the department be subjected to his attitude and behavior? When you put your blood sweat and tears into a job you hope becomes a career, and instead youre over looked but taken advantage of why stay if you cant grow? Want a better OSAT score, higher better employees. Want better employees that will stick around, pay them what theyre worth, pay them more they will work harder, the hiring process will be a lot more in depth, if an employee is hard working and deserving promote them, sales and osat will increase when employees are happy, not when theyre cleaning up after employees who dont care or being taken advantage of by their dept head. Pointless to vent I suppose but its frustrating. This is a company that would benefit from undercover boss.

in my store we're catastrophically shorthanded up front. the store manager has been moving our dependable people to other depts. the holidays are almost upon us, will replacements come? i'm not holding my breath.

Its still our fault in some ways one way or another. You have politicians and special interest groups that try and disillusion into something that the union is a bad thing and its constantly repeated often as if it is truth that we don't need a union when in fact we need it now more than ever, but somewhere along the way people don't want to put up a fight because its just a "job" when in reality you can make a career out of it. The thing is you and any "old timer" has just as much of an equal vote as they do and when you ratify these contracts you vote on them. If you were to get more people who actually attended the meetings you could have a say in the contracts despite the full time members. The thing is Kroger knows the union doesn't have the leverage it needs for a strike which is why we get the contracts we have now. If people would just stand up and unite together it is a force that Kroger or any company for that matter can't handle.

things would be a lot different if unions had the power that they used to. They've systematically been dismantled over decades; a lot of the tactics they used to use to pressure companies are now illegal. They tables have turned - pushed further by us all working in an industry that has been "Walmartized" and had prevailing wages and benefits that have been suppressed for years.

The unions support Democrats. The unions mostly just support full-timers.
Conclusion:
The people you see defending the unions are most likely Democrats and are full-timers. They have vested interests, and don't care about the part-timers.
So, when you see people defending the unions here on this site, or say something like "It's the part-timers fault for not voting," just remember who these people really are.
They support democrats mostly because they're social economics where as republicans would rather hire that illegal across the border for $3 / hr.
That must be why democrats oppose everify, fight tighter border control, oppose interior sweeps and push new attempts at amnesty. They want them to casting democrat votes all while they use them, abuse them, and manipulate them. Most of the richest members of congress are democrats. Lists of billionaires are riddled with democrats. They've been a party of racism, division and classism. They've just found new ways expand exploitation of immigrants from legal masses heading to our shores to the illegals climbing over fences.

Better raises should be given

Half the seafood leads in SW D11 are lazy and don't deserve what they're paid. Can't agree on this one.

It probably has something to do with sales volume. That's why in SW a meat manager makes 4 bucks more than a seafood lead. Meat volume is usually 3-5x or more than seafood.

Meat contract in SW does pay you differently depending on volume. One for low volume stores, one for stores over 500k weekly, one for market stores.

Because the union does very little aside from preserving what long time full timers have earned. It's great they preserve what has been earned in the past, but they need to look forward as well.
Want a better OSAT score, higher better employees.
