I found out the other day our store will be open one hour later on the Thanksgiving holiday. It's probably a sign that at some point the store will not be closed at all. I haven't heard the closing time for Christmas Eve but I am willing to bet it will be later as well.
Our contract says the store closes at 5:00 PM and people are to be scheduled by inverse seniority for no more than 4 hours unless to meet the needs of the business.
Since I started where I'm at, the store has closed at 4:00PM on Thanksgiving and the night before Thanksgiving, the store stays open rather than closes at its normal time. Our store too always asks for volunteers to work overnight and on Thanksgiving, but it's always stated that if not enough people volunteer, the store has no choice but to schedule enough people for that day.
We have sign ups too. However we usually have enough help that day... EVEN those who don't sign up are pencilled in to work. One guy says he is going to Hawaii this year (lie). Last year it was Paris.

That sounds really nice. Too bad my store can't function unless almost every employee is scheduled for 8 hour shifts
I'm only available on weekends, so I'm hoping they won't screw something up and schedule me on Thanksgiving despite my availability. Should I ask for it off anyway?
I wish I knew. I just called my store and the guy said "I'm not sure but I think 5pm"? I haven't seen a sign up sheet anywhere. What's a bummer is that my family usually has 2 Thanksgivings since my family is broken - the one on Thanksgiving evening and the one the day after Thanksgiving. So I probably can't go to either for the first time in my life. Makes me really want to find a full-time job ASAP so I can quit this hellhole.
So i was just quoting times that had been in the past, but I found a sheet posted today saying we'll be closing at 5pm thanksgiving, 6pm christmas eve, and 9pm new year's eve.
yeah my store in ATL is open 24/7, 364 days per year and we only "close" at 7pm Christmas Eve because contract requires it. i can't wait to see what nightmare awakes next week. our contract does mention reverse seniority for working holidays but we haven't got anybody left to work period otherwise some full time people should be off.
but i can just see getting stuck with some something stupid like running the floor that afternoon. of course since it's an unmanageable chaos, that might be easier than the fun at customer care.
i'm in georgia too but I work at fuel and it's regular hours all holidays apparently
just can't wait till christmas since the only supervisor there is going on vacation and the next fuel center employee in seniority is only 4 months at kroger
management at my store is so far under par it's ridiculous
I think the worst part about working on Thanksgiving necessarily isn't having to work on Thanksgiving, but all the customers who wish me a happy Thanksgiving all day long.
That, and thinking about how Costco is closed on Thanksgiving.
