I work in the bakery for minimum wage and they treat me like a slave. I was hired for a part time position and worked 44 hrs. last week. The 0 degrees freezer FULL of frozen dough along with may other HEAVY items stacked 9ft high. They expect me to move every box out of the way to find what they need??? I have bruises all over my arms... this is so not worth minimum wage. Also my scheduled time to work is 2pm to 10 pm... I don't get out of there until after 11pm.

My feet hurt, my back hurts and I dread going in everyday!

Get out of Kroger as fast as you can!

If that's not an option, make an account here with your username as "bakeryslave" and we'll all share the misery together.

Just a tip, but you only have to work what your schedule says. Yes they may ask you to stay later. You can refuse.

With that said, yes, Bakery is pretty much like slave work at times. I started off in Bakery, and it really was an exhausting job.

Not true.  It depends on what their contract says.  Mine in Mi states that if they ask me to stay an hour before the end of my shift, I have to stay over an hour or face getting written up.  If they ask me to stay three hours before the end of my shift, I have to stay until the work is done or 8 hours before my next shift or face getting written up.  My store managers aren't going to write anyone up for not staying.

I kind of like working 14 1/2 hours a day.  Not sure what the OP is complaining about.  just kidding, although I did work super charged OT 3 weeks ago.  No one would believe the total hours for the week.

The key to the OPs dilema is organization.  When stacking everything 9' high, put the stuff you need first on top.  Put the dead weight on the bottom.  Put labels so you can read them and find everything quicker.  I have a dept manager that manages to stack every quick seller under the dead weight everytime he puts stock away.  Every single time for the last 5 years!

It sounds like whoever is doing the ordering for bakery isn't keeping track of what they have in stock.  We get a frozen order 6 days a week.  You should never have more than two days worth of product on hand.  If you have enough to get you through the next two days, DON'T ORDER ANYMORE OF IT!  Also, keep track of what you've ordered and whether it's been brought up or not.  I was on vacation a few weeks ago and when I returned to work I discovered three days worth of product left in the back freezer.  Nobody brought the orders up and they just kept re-ordering the same stuff over and over

Are you local 951? I ask because I don't recall reading such a provision for local 876. If you are 876, I'd appreciate it if you could direct me to where it states this rule in the handbook.

Yes, 876.  A senor employee explained it to me.  I can't find it in the old handbook but will ask about it when I see the  person next.

My managers aren't strict about enforcing it.  I like staying over and have never been forced to stay longer than 2 hours past my shift.  Begged, yes, but never demanded.

Oh hey another bakery employee! :D

Doing breakout is not that bad...WHEN you have enough time to do it.

Lately i'm getting all these 5-9s and then I get yelled at when everything isn't done. When I work 1-9 everything's great, I get started at a reasonable time so i'm ok.

But yes, anyone who thinks it's an easy job where you just bake cookies all day is full of it, it does involve lifting and some physical labor.

Bakery/deli is basically the hardest job for regular clerks in the store. I asked all my coworkers about it, and they all agreed.

I asked the coworker about it this am.  She is certain about if the manager asks an hour before the end of a shift to stay, the employee has to stay an hour.  She is not certain about how long a person has to stay if asked 3 hours before the end of their shift.  I am unable to find anything about it in the union handbook.  I will check the employee handbook from the store if I can find it.

We are so short handed in my department right now, we have no choice but to work OT to keep the workflow on schedule.  Tonight was my night off(already scheduled 40 hours).  I was requested to work at another store  but my manager wanted me to work 8 hours tonight for our store.   I have worked a lot of OT in the last calendar year.  I don't mind the OT but there has to be a break even point in sight...

Sounds to me like your dept head is a bit challenged in the ordering and organization skills department.  Going into the holidays it's very important to keep yourself AND your crew organized
